He sold his businesses to the U.S Steel Corporation bringing in a whopping $200 million. He then decided that he had an obligation as one of the richest individuals, to give back to the people and help others. He gave away nearly 90% of his fortune to various causes, adding up to be around $4.75 billion in today’s terms. He gave this money away to many libraries, public works, etc. He believed that if all people had to access to books and knowledge, they would have the utilities to become successful if they had the drive to learn. He also established endowments for peace and scholarships, heroism, and the advancement of minorities, lastly public broadcasting. His strong belief in obtaining world peace led him to endow in all of these peace foundations. He was a strong advocate for the founding of the Peace Palace in The Hague, leading him to found the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in 1910. Carnegie said to have founded this organization to, “hasten the abolition of international war.” He also founded the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburg, known today as the Carnegie-Mellon University. This continuing on his belief that anyone could become successful if they had the drive for it, and worked hard enough. He came from making $1.20 a week in a factory, to owning the leading steel company in the country and making it big. His drive to achieve his goals showed the world just what anyone can do with hard work and dedication. He also impacted American history due to all of the new things that could be made with his steel. His steel made it possible for railroads to transport goods and food, also for new machines to be invented.
