After continuous great play from Jackson, Canada’s lead was shortened to 7 points and the USA was in striking distance. Jackson was on a roll making shots every possession. He went up for a layup with 1:30 left in the game and Andrew undercut him and he fell down hard. The fall was heard all the way in the nosebleed seats. Jackson was then carried off on a stretcher to the locker room with an apparent back injury. After he regained consciousness he unstrapped himself from the stretcher and wanted to reenter the game. “You can’t go back in if you get any more damage on your spine you could get paralyzed.” The doctor said.
“I have to do this, I owe it to my team” Jackson replied without any regret. Jackson walked out to see the game tied up and his team had the ball. He reentered the game and wanted to take the game winning shot. He hit the shot as time expired right over Andrew Jones. From that point on he was considered a national hero. He retired immediately after the game and he went on to be inducted into the basketball Hall of Fame for winning USA their 5th straight gold
