Johnson never appealed to the Northerners because of his Southern origin and his background of being a former slaveholder, but Lincoln originally chose him as vice president to get people to believe that Lincoln was a part of a new and better political party. At Johnson’s Vice President Inauguration, he had shown up drunk from medication and was seen in a bad light by the people causing dislike towards him from the beginning.
As Johnson’s presidency continued his cold appearance, personality, and trouble with controlling his rage during public speeches had led to his impeachment. The people never trusted Johnson from the beginning because the Northerners saw him as a Southerner and the Southerners had seen him as a traitor.
Andrew Johnson had a hard time of putting his thoughts into words that the people could relate to; instead his words came out very harsh and aggressive. Andrew Johnson’s verbal attacks on Thaddeus Stevens, Wendell Phillips, and Charles Sumner had made Johnson seem very unprofessional and a bad political leader by belittling the people he had to work with daily.
Johnson’s actions as president had directly led to his impeachment and his unpleasant personality had indirectly led to his impeachment. From the very beginning, appearing drunk at his inauguration, attacking other political figures, and not being able to control his anger had directly led to his impeachment.
