Old Major is Karl Marx the father of communism/totalitarianism, Snowball is Leon Trotsky a political figure who opposed Joseph Stalin and was eventually exiled from the Soviet Union, much like Snowball was exiled from Animal Farm. Napoleon is Joseph Stalin. Joseph Stalin was a Russian leader who helped found the Soviet Union. Napoleon is also an allusion to Napoleon Bonaparte because the pig Napoleon gained absolute control as did the human Napoleon. Squealer is propaganda because whenever something happens especially when it makes Napoleon look bad, squealer spins it so Napoleon is always the hero and because the animals aren’t intelligent they accept it as truth. Mr. and Mrs. Jones are Tsar Nicholas Ⅱ and his family. Tsar Nicholas Ⅱ was the Tsar of Russia until the Russian Revolution occurred and kicked him out of power, like when the animals rebelled and kicked out Mr. and Mrs. Jones in Animal Farm. Boxer and Clover the horses represent the working class and the working class of the female kind because in Animal Farm Boxer and Clover are always working and don’t get more food better living conditions or anything for all their hard work much like the Russians in poverty under the rule of Stalin. Orwell wanted to express his condemnation of the rise of the Soviets and the evils within the Communist Party. Orwell wrote the book during WWⅡ but it wasn’t published until the war ended in Europe. By using allegory he could present the attitudes and actions of these characters without directly identifying them.
