Anita And Me Character Analysis

‘Anita and Me’ is a first person narrative novel published in 1996. It was written by a British Asian actress and writer Meera Syal. The author grew up just outside Wolverhampton, where the novel Anita and Me is set, around the 1960s and 70s called Tollington. The novel is mainly focused on Syal’s own life and what was happening around her at that time. Moreover, life in the 1960s – 70s was rough for people who were immigrating and also people of Tollington as industrial were getting closed; which lead to high employment and low economy. Moreover around that time, there were few jobs and it was mostly the women who could work which lead to a change in social relationships. Meera Syal shows Meena as a character who’s more like her mother because her mother is showed as an uncaring person as she takes her daughter boyfriend on the Fun Fair. Moreover, Meena tries to say sorry by putting her arm and kissing Anita on the cheek, this shows how she is really sorry and wants forgiveness from Anita. Meanwhile, Anita doesn’t care about her friendship as she pushes her ‘violently’. Friends are meant to be forgiving and caring but this quote shows how she doesn’t really care to save her friendship and getting back
Anita says ‘’ I’m going to get pony for Christmas. I’m going to keep it at Sherries’ Meena thinks ‘I felt blindly jealous’’. This makes Meena annoyed and crosses because Sherries was still her friends which Meena didn’t want to happen because she wants Anita by herself. Meera Syal uses the word ‘’ blindly’’ to represents how Meena felt and the negative impact it will have on their friendship. This refers to Anita mom because she gone off with a ‘butcher’ leaving her daughters and not saving they relationship of mom and daughter. Which predict Anita is more like her mom who has no feeling towards others and this creates tension towards reader because even the fortune teller predicts she will turn out like her
