Written by Anthony Eaton, the novel A New Kind of Dreaming
(ANKoD) is about a troubled youth named Jamie Riley who is forced to re-locate to Port Barren for isolated care instead of going into jail. As the story progresses, Jamie finds himself haunted by the mystery of a young refugee. In the opening of the novel, the reader is introduced to the protagonist who doesn’t seem to belong in this “new town”.
The conflicts that this character faces, such as other characters, society and himself, help him to eventually find a sense of belonging and be able to call the “new town” home. Through these conflicts, the reader is urged to consider the importance of belonging and the significance of being able to call a place home because after all, that is what forms our identity and individuality.
Body 1:
In the beginning of the novel, Jamie Riley, the protagonist, is shown as a troubled youth who hates the world because he feels like everyone and everything is against him. The reader gets the sense that he hates the world because of his reckless/careless attitude and the way he behaves around certain people. He is distrusting of authority and cares a great deal about his reputation. He says to Lorraine “What’s the point?”. This quote shows that he has an ‘i don’t care and just give up’ attitude. The novel describes to the reader that Jamie has a tough like and that he seems to have lost all hope because he feels like everyone and everything is against him.
Body 2:
As the novel begins to progress, Jamie is shown to be in conflict with the antagonist Sergeant Butcher. Butcher, as he is formally known as, blames Jamie for all the recent vandalism in the town of Port Barren. All the vandalism has seemed to happen at the same time that Jamie moved to town so Butcher blames Jamie because he assumes Jamie has done it as he has been trouble in the past and that is the reason he was transferred to Port Barren. Butcher threatens
