Comparing Antacids

Question:
Is a generic antacid as effective as a comparable brand-name antacid at neutralizing hydrochloric acid?
Hypothesis:
Rexall will be more effective because it has twice the amount of acid in a smaller solution making it stronger than Tums.
Procedure:
1) Crush 2 small Rexall’s and put in a flask.
2) Crush 1 Tum and put in a flask.
3) Poor 25ml of warm water in each flask.
4) Let flasks sit for 6 minutes and swish around fluids every 20 seconds.
5) Add 5 drops of methyl orange to each flask.
6) Record observations.
7) Add 1ml of NaOH until you see a color change (both flasks are the same color)
8) Record amount of NaOH used for each antacid.
9) The flask that needed the least NaOH is best/more effective.
10) Clean your equipment.
Observations:
Antacid
Color
MCL acid
NaOH
Tums
Merky liquid, yellow
35ml
5ml
Rexall
Yellowish orange
35ml
5ml

Results:
In an experiment to determine whether a generic antacid (Rexall) is affective at reducing heartburn or a brand name antacid (Tums) is more effective, you must first find which one neutralizes the hydrochloric acid in our stomach better.
After creating 2 solutions, one using Rexall and the other Tums (you can see how to do in the procedure) we found that Tums is the more effective antacid.
The methyl orange indicated to us that Tums is more effective since methyl orange turns yellow when it is in a basic environment. In our experiment Tums were more of a pure yellow after 5ml of NaOH was added than the Rexall with equal amounts of NaOH which means that Tums is more effective in reducing acid levels.
Judging by these tests, although Tums may cost you a little bit more, it’s worth it. Why buy a brand that’s not going to do the job well, Tums is better for heartburn.

Pre-Lab: Analgesic drugs are known for reducing pain, while antiseptic drugs reduce symptoms such as fevers and swelling. However, some of these drugs can reduce both illnesses. To obtain a pure compound in these drugs, the scientist needs to separate the desired compound by taking advantage of the different physical and chemical properties. Such as; different boiling points, melting points and their solubility properties. To do this a chemist can also asses the differences between acidic and basic substances when they are added to water soluble mixtures. Within this current experiment I will asses the pharmaceutical preparation of Panacetin, by using it 's solubility along with other organic molecules. We know that Panacetin is made up of sucrose, aspirin and some other unknown substance. We know the substance has to be Phenacetin or Acetanilide. To help solidify our reasoning, we need a % recovery of 8-12% sucrose, 35-45% aspirin and 45-55% unknown.…

To take advantage of this opportunity the company should target current aspirin users since that market share is 90% and not target current Tylenol users since they are already converts and therefore, perceive no value in changing to Datril. The aspirin market is dominated by 3 main players and Bristol-Myers’ has two of the brands. Attracting current aspirin user will no doubt also benefit Tylenol, while at the same cannibalize Bristol-Myers own aspirin brands. A vertical brand extension using Datril as the…

Pros: Datril’s effective element is acetaminophen, which has the same function as Aspirin but less side effects. In contrast, acetaminophen analgesics raised the pain threshold and reduced fever without having the anti-inflammatory effect of aspirin, thus meeting the needs of people who suffered from upset stomach. The data shows that acetaminophen’s market almost doubles while Aspirin’s only increases by 9%. It means that more and more people prefer to use acetaminophen. Targeting acetaminophen users apparently is a very promising action.…

First of all, this option gives the company a chance to effectively target. The target customer of Datril should not be overlapped with those of Tylenol. Tylenol was a dominant and well established brand in the acetaminophen market, and was used for a long time by loyal customers who get recommendations from medical professions. It means the existing customers were likely not price-sensitive compared to aspirin customers. Datril is not able to offer an effective differentiated value to these customers compared to Tylenol. Therefore Marvin Koslow should target at aspirin users who were lightly suffering from irritation of stomach lining and who didn’t visit doctors. ‘No side effect’ is more valuable to these customers. As we target these customers, Bristol-Myers’ offering could give an optimal value proposition between customer’s and the company’s value.…

Bristol-Myers clearly saw an opportunity in Acetaminophen market and hence they are planning to launch Datril, acetaminophen type pain reliever. Acetaminophen pain reliever has the advantage over aspirin type with less side effects such as upset stomach. Acetaminophen was first-introduced in mid-1950s and it was not until early 1960s when it became available as over the counter drug. It was first launched as an over the counter drug by McNeil Labs, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, namely Tylenol. Tylenol has captured 8% of analgesic market, which implies that Tylenol has been dominating the Acetaminophen market.…

This experiment will involve several steps. The first step will involve a simple reaction to determine the concentration of the NaOH that will be used in this experiment using a solid acid standard. Using the standardized NaOH, the next step of the lab will involve determining the concentration of the HCl. Once we have the concentration of the standardized HCl, we will conclude the lab by determining the amount of acid that is consumed when you use an antacid tablet. First the tablet is dissolved and an excess of acid of known concentration is added to the tablet. The solution is then briefly heated to insure that all of the antacid reacts. Finally, the remaining unreacted acid is titrated with base (NaOH) to determine the amount left over and hence, the amount that reacted with the tablet. The chemical reaction which occurs is:…

Some consumers want to know if acetaminophen dissolves faster in the form of tablets, gelcaps, or caplets in order to get the fastest pain relief. The purpose of this experiment was to find out which of the three tested forms of acetaminophen would dissolve the most over a time period ten minutes. The hypothesis stated that the tablets would dissolve the most over the ten minutes. The hypothesis was tested by dropping ten of each of the forms of the acetaminophen into two thirds a cup of boiling water and observing how much each had dissolved after ten minutes. The data collected supported the hypothesis and the tablets were significantly more dissolved than the gelcaps and caplets. This experiment could be changed by having a component stir the acetaminophen and the water together.…

The burning sensation in your chest and throat. The sour taste in your mouth. The uncomfortable regurgitations. Once these symptoms hit, you know exactly what you're in for: painful heartburn and indigestion. Generally, these bouts of discomfort are associated with running to the medicine cabinet to grab some of those chalky antacid tablets in hope of some relief. By definition, antacids are just any substance that neutralizes the acid in your stomach, thus preventing acid reflux and heartburn. But what if I told you that relief could be found in your pantry or kitchen rather than the medicine cabinet? While many individuals rely solely on over-the-counter antacid medications, a growing number of people have started to realize the convenience…
