Ann Taylor: Survival in Speciality Retail

1. What industry is Ann in?

Ann Taylor is a specialty retail clothing store for ladies only. The quality of Ann Taylor is similar to that of Talbots, Abercrombie & Fitch, or Banana Republic. Keep in mind Ann Taylor was never a person like Elizabeth Taylor. Ann Taylor is only the brand identity.

2. Using Porter’s five forces model, identify the key issues in the competitive environment that affect ANN and its rivals. Identify and evaluate the competitive forces that shape the industry structure. (pg 99 4.8)

Ann Taylor uses Brand Identity as the top determinant of entry, the brand itself resembles prestige, wealth, and more of a high society look. Ann Taylor also developed Ann Taylor LOFT – a more relaxed appeal for women who are still looking for that name brand recognition with the relaxed lifestyle.
In Porter’s Determinants of Rivalry, ANN is consistently facing the industry growth. New brands such as Hollister are grabbing the eyes of the younger generation and appealing to their senses through marketing tools.
Ann Taylor, established in 1954 has held a higher value on supplies to provide consumers with the high quality clothing they are well known for. However the was a glitch in the 90’s where executives felt they could cut cost on the quality fabrics used in manufacturing the clothing line. This dropped the profits for ANN and the business had to re-assess and re-establish the higher quality line that they had become known for. Substituting for lesser cost supplies was not in the cards for Ann Taylor. However a “substitute” in the clothing line has shown profitable. As briefly mentioned above, ANN led way to Ann Taylor- LOFT. LOFT was created to appeal to a younger crowd, the product cost was less, but the brand identity of ANN was still there, creating the demand for the product. ANN simple used a different focus strategy for marketing LOFT, producing a new wave of buyers.

Ann Taylor’s current strategy was designed for professional women whose time was limited and was drawn to Ann Taylor total wardrobe strategy, personalized customer service, store layouts and continual flow of new products. Within their divisions, Ann Taylor’s purpose is to the working customer and with this being their primary focus, these divisions have been successful. With ANN having multiple divisions this could hinder growth with each division-competition. ANN could become its own direct competitor with its division. Because nowadays the working environment is more casual; LOFT had become the competition for Ann Taylor because they were more oriented toward casual clothing. Starting with major brand DKNY which Macy’s sells their mission statement is, “The mission of the Donna Karan Company, as a design driven company, is to represent the international pulse of New York in the design, marketing and delivery of a complete lifestyle system to a global customer”. DKNY is all about marketing to the New York style consumer who keeps up with East Coast styles and also runs on the more expensive side with a dress averaging around 200 dollars and jeans around 150 dollars. Although the brand is very trendy and made with quality materials one would expect at that price, it simply isn’t really the Macy’s target market. Macy’s consumer expects to shop for deals on the cheaper end as opposed to going to a competitor on the pricey side such as Nordstrom or Bloomingdales. However Macy’s is very strategic in the placing of this brand because it’s generally right next to their private label INC and that proves smart because someone who loves a 300-dollar dress from DKNY can walk over a few feet to INC and find one very similar for much, much less.…

Since the beginning of Trump's campaign, he has boldly said his beliefs on illegal immigration and deportation. This has caused an increase of white extremist groups to come to the surface. Before, many of these groups were thought of as having very exaggerated views on immigration, but now that their views have been talked about so often by Trump, this is not the case. Many of the white supremacist groups believe that they have been getting more support and attention since Trump's candidacy. He has given people who seemed to be drowned out from the political system a drive to stand up for the issues they believe need to be changed. The organizations believe that Trump has shown the world that we should be talking about things that are often…

Any business, however, that can enjoy longevity and sustained success has either defined and dominated a market segment by understanding and listening to its needs or embraced a culture of innovation – regardless of passing trends. Lane Bryant, the plus-sized women’s retailer, has done both. Since the company’s humble beginnings more than 100 years ago, from single store front to mail order catalog to an online store, Lane Bryant has consistently been at the forefront of supplying the market’s needs (in this case, plus-sized women), liberating women by embracing their curves and providing real-world clothing solutions to become the dominant force in plus-sized women’s…
