Loss will always be part of our lives but how an individual faces it will ultimately build or break them.
In comparing Wake by “Anna Hope” and the poem “One Art” by Elizabeth Bishop, all the characters experience loss and both works conclude with some sort of closure. To begin with, “One Art” was the given title to Bishop’s work where she recognizes the word “Art’ as loss which opened up to a broader meaning. In almost every single paragraph, she repeated the sentence “ The art of losing isn't hard to master”, (Bishop 6) which induces that loss is a very common feeling and sometimes it does happen for a reason. It began with small items such as the loss of her mother's watch or her little keys but this eventually prepared her when it came to the loss of something greater. Even though she talks about moving to another continent and leaving behind all the beautiful memories, she can now create new and better ones but only if she gets over loss. The author's tone and placements of words ultimately set the mood and depicted the characters ability to handles loss. In One Art, the whole poem began with a lightened tone that set the tempo for the rest. Her constant repetition of “losing isn’t hard to master” or reminding us that “None of these will bring disaster” showcased her resilience. She never allows herself to be brought down by such grievances thus constantly building her character. The careful depiction of moving to another country was dictated by short and quick sentences. Thus, in this calm and optimistic tone it ultimately made it easier for her to cope with loss. It was vivid that she had experienced the feeling of loss many times thus always staying calm. Comparatively, in the novel the author followed an emotion filled tone that contrarily didn't help the characters get over loss. Ada was a prime example as her inability to get over the loss of her son drove her mad ““Stop it,” she says. “Stop that. You knew him. You knew my son””. Her aggressive tone towards towards the salesmen depicted her personality. Her inability to handle to the situation was the reason that she will never get over her son. She is a very delicate women who fails to dissect the situation and reacts very thoughtfully. One needs to understand and admit loss to get over it.
