and Mrs. Tallent moved to Deadwood for four years, then moved to Rapid City for fourteen years. Annie became the superintendent in Pennington County for four years. Along with being the superintendent, she was a board member and then became the president. In 1897, she moved to Sturgis and wrote her book The Black Hills, or Last Hunting Grounds of the Dakotahs. She passed away in 1901. She had a monument built for her at the old Gordon Stockade (South Dakota State Historical Society). This monument is meant to represent her heroism and resourcefulness of pioneer women. Along with the monument, she had an elementary school which was built in 1950. However, in 1994, the Rapid City Board of Education dismissed the Tallent name and called it South Park Elementary. There is an annual award given to an outstanding female teacher called, Honored Woman Educators, formerly known as Annie D. Tallent Club. She is trying to be erased from history because of the way she acted when she first arrived in the Black Hills and how she wrote in her book. As written by Sneve, “Annie Tallent’s malicious, bigoted treatment of the Dakota or Sioux Indians, would best serve mankind if it were burned.” Throughout Annie’s lifetime, she made many great accomplishments, along with some bad accomplishments. Annie Tallent is remembered however you want to remember her. She is either an outstanding woman who made history for being the first woman to enter the Black Hills, or she can be the woman
