Demory, Pamela. “Apocalypse Now Redux: Heart Of Darkness Moves Into New Territory,” Literature Film Quarterly 35.1 (2007): 342-349. Literary Reference Center. Web. 19 Nov. 2013.
Even though The Heart Of Darkness has two different views about the fate of imperialism the pessimistic view and the optimistic view, both views closely relate to the views depicted in Apocalypse Now Redux. “But at first glance you could see there a singleness of intention, an honest concern for the right way of doing work which made these humble pages thought out so many years ago luminous with another than a professional light.” All throughout the book and the movie the depiction of Kurtz is realized to be frightening
to the soldiers. The French River Plantation scene was used to convey that the riverboat crew was moving back in time as they progressed further and further up the river. The diction used in the book and the camera angles and lighting in the movie paint a picture for the reader that is remarkable and makes you feel involved. In the Heart Of Darkness are women really important to the plot and how do they make a contribution to the text? Marlow associates European Civilization with the women. “Girl! What? Did I mention a girl? Oh, she is out of it- completely. They-the women. I mean-are out of it- should be out of it. We must help them to stay in that beautiful world of their own, lest ours gets worse. Oh, she has to be out of it.” In the movie Apocalypse Now the women associate corrupt civilization values. The deaths in both The Heart Of Darkness and Apocalypse Now represent the sacrifice that must be made to achieve a mission. In the Heart Of Darkness there is one death, which is the helmsman. In Apocalypse Now there are two deaths Clean and the helmsman. Both deaths constitute major disruptions in the forward movement of the narrative and the physical journey to reach Kurtz. Both Heart Of Darkness and Apocalypse Now play a crucial relevance in the Vietnam War. In both Marlow is given a mission to find Kurtz and kill him or bring him back. The mission is accomplished in Apocalypse Now and is depicted when the cow is slashed open. Marlow must make a decision if he wants to carry the pen or carry the sward in which he choses the pen, which is more important to him.
