5th-Period Antigone Essay
Do you know what a tragic hero is? A tragic hero is usually a person with several qualities. Qualities such as being royal or usually noble and that have a tragic flaw that leads to their downfall. The downfall also leads to a unhappy ending. Antigone is an example of a tragic hero because of her excessive pride, her royalty her being well known and well liked also her tragic flaw leads to an unhappy ending. Antigone was well known and well liked because of her father was the former king of Thebes. Her brothers Polynices and Eteocles battle for who was going to be next king. Antigone seems well liked because Haemon tells his father that the people believe Antigone should burry her brother Polynices. This shows that Antigone was well known and well liked throughout the story. Therefore Antigone shows her tragic flaw which is her abundance of pride. Polynices and Eteocles the brothers of Antigone fought for who were going to be next king. They both kill each other Creon the new king decides that Polynices should not be buried or they will be stoned to death. Ismene wanted to help Antigone but she was scared of Creon. Although Antigone felt that her brother Polynices should be buried because of her beliefs. For example “And now you can prove what you are a true sister or a traitor to your family.” This quote proves Antigone excessive pride by saying that she feels that her family should be first but Ismene Isn’t helping. Lastly Antigone has her downfall of the story. Antigone is sentence to death
