Loyalty And Family In Sophocles 'Antigone'

In Sophocles’s tragedy Antigone, and the family she has left their trust and the ability to function is on the line. The character named Antigone shows her bravery and loyalty by staying true to her words. Antigone defies the law to not bury Polyneices. Antigone gets herself and her sister, Ismene, into trouble with Creon. Ismene didn't like the idea of defining the decree Creon put out and left Antigone alone. Antigone is willing to go against a king to do what's right that shows loyalty to her family and shows she will give life for the greater good. Antigone with or with her sister, for or against the law, was able to do what she thought was right. Antigone proves herself many times in scene 1. As shown when, “ but I will bury him; and
if I must die, I say that this crime is holy: I shall lie down with him in death, and I shall be as dear to him as he to me.” (Sophocles 667) This proves Antigone shows loyalty towards her family. Antigone's loyalty towards her family gives Antigone brave, because she does what's right no matter what the price. Ismene proves she has no place with Antigone. By running away from something because she was told not to. As shown when,” Our own death would be if we should go against Creon and do what he has forbidden!” This shows how much of a coward Ismene is. It shows Ismene is not loyal towards her family. Antigone’s bravery shows who she really is as a character within Sophocles’s play Antigone. Although Ismene shows no loyalty and does not have an ounce of bravery her cowardness saves her life. Antigone wasn't smart by defining the law but she did what was right, but it shows that she is loyal to her family and will give her life to do whats right for them
