Any Given Sunday Summary
July 14, 2014

Any Given Sunday We watched the movie “Any Given Sunday” in class the past two days. The movie was filmed in 1999 and is a drama film based on a fictional professional football team named the
Miami Sharks. The Sharks are owned by Christina Pagniacci (Cameron Diaz) who also happens to be the general manager of the team. She inherited the team from her father when he passed away. The team is coached by “Tony D” (Al Pacino) who has been the head coach of the team for decades and can basically do whatever he wants since he has two Pantheon Cups, similar to the Super Bowl. The Sharks are having somewhat of a down season and may not even make the playoffs. To add to the team’s misfortunes, star quarterback and three time MVP, Cap Rooney,

When Cap gets hurt, back up quarterback Tyler
Cherubini comes into the game and promptly gets hurt as well. Tony D has no choice but to put in third string quarterback Willie Beamen regardless of his lack of knowledge of the team’s offensive playbook and his throughtheroof nervousness. Beamen gets into the game and throws up in the huddle, giving the Sharks’ fan base very little hope of their young last hope quarterback. Beamen manages to rise to the occasion and throws a huge touchdown pass late in the game. As the Sharks are rallying back with their third string quarterback and trying to defeat the Minnesota Americans, the runningback on a few drives later gets hit and fumbles the ball and
Minnesota scoops and scores to add to their lead and to win the game. Even though the Sharks lost, Beamen built some confidence. Once second string quarterback Tyler Cherubini comes back from his injury, he is named the starter and doesn’t quite get the job done and the job is handed back over to Beamen. Under the leadership of Beamen, the Sharks manage to win a game right before their bye week and get a little momentum rolling. With the success and fame

Shannon: Crosby has had a bit of a hard time in the years since the last Olympics games in Vancouver. On the first of January in 2011, during the Winter Classic, Crosby received a hit from David Steckel, of the Washington Capitals. This hit resulted in his first reported concussion of his time in the NHL. Crosby didn’t return to full game action until mid-March 2012. This was nearly 14 months later, which was much of two seasons. This will be the biggest tournament that Crosby has participated in since the accident, but he is seeming to be 100 percent recovered and his game performance it back to its usual self in all of his games for quite some while. February 7th, 2010. Super Bowl XLIV. Four years post Hurricane Katrina. As smoke cleared from “The Who” halftime concert, Thomas Morstead, the kicker for the New Orleans Saints, set to kick the ball off to the Indianapolis Colts to start the third quarter. With the Saints down 10 to 6, and Indianapolis’s Chad Simpson standing in his own end zone ready to return the kick off, Saints Head Coach, Sean Payton, called one of the gutsiest plays in the super bowl era of football. Thomas Morstead standing at his own 30 yard line executed the only on-side kick before the fourth quarter in NFL history. The ball traveled 15 yards before being touched by Hank Basket, an Indianapolis Colts player, who could not make a clean recovery. The ball ended up at the bottom of a pile of bodies all fighting for it. It took over a minute for the officials to clear bodies out of the pile and determine who definitively recovered the on-side kick. Chris Reis, a safety for the New Orleans Saints, came out of the pile victorious. The Saints would subsequently score a touchdown, taking their first lead of the game.…

Although there is no one player alone that can cause a football team to be successful, the quarterback may be the most important and influential of all. A quarterback is the leader, the captain, and the general of a football team both on and off the field. He commands the offense on a play-to-play basis, given that he has the ball in his hands play after play. They get all of the glory, along with all of the blame. Take the Indianapolis Colts for example; they were one of the most consistent teams in the NFL. They made appearances in the playoffs year after year and even won a Super Bowl with their star quarterback Peyton Manning leading the way. However, their star quarterback underwent neck surgery early this year and has been unable to play. Without him leading the helm, the Indianapolis Colts have not won a game this season, going 0-8. This should provide an example to all of how important a quarterback is to a team.…

Peyton Manning drops back into the pocket and looks over the field. It’s the superbowl, the grandest stage of them all. He senses pressure and steps up in the pocket. The defense is in man coverage and he knows Wes Welker is going to be open on a crossing route. He plants his feet and fires but little does he know the Seahawks are in a disguised cover three roll coverage. The safety jumps the route and intercepts the pass and returns it for a touchdown. Peyton read the coverage wrong and payed the price and this can happen to any quarterback if you don’t know how to read a coverage.…
