In the city of Mumbai, there is a thriving city and successful businesses like Bollywood. It’s beautiful, but in the center there is 1 square mile area that is different. This is the slum called Dharavi. To the unknown eye, Dharavi is a dirty poor district that has nothing to give to the community. There is garbage that is dug through, poverty, and disease. That is what you would think upon first looking at it, but what is shocking is how thriving it actually is. Social class- large numbers of people who have similar amounts of income and education and who work at jobs that are roughly comparable in prestige.
In the small community of Dharavi, there are a total of 1 million people. They are all within the same area which means they are very close in a lot of areas. As a way of income, each are involved in different jobs, but looking at ragpickers they only make one dollar a day. So in one year, they would make $365. That isn’t enough to live on, but it makes due for them. They live in a different society that views money differently. Yet, that is still not enough to live off of. They pay their bills, food, and necessities they might need. Then we look at education. The children have to pay to go to school, unlike us who can go for free and must go. Since their money issues are very difficult, most children have problems going to get an education. That being said, there are a lot of uneducated children over there. Though there are programs with volunteers that are trying to help those who are uneducated. When comparing the slum to the world around it, you can notice the differences. First the housing. In the slums, the houses are smaller and squarer than normal. It doesn’t have multiple floors and more than one family are out into it. They have very little personal items and trinkets in their home and they overall don’t have much. Changing the view, a normal house of a middle class person would be a larger living space with multiple floors. Only a single family would live under the roof and each person would have their own room. Each person has many personal items and the house is filled with many items that make it homey. Just comparing the one, we can already see the major difference in the material culture. Though people say material isn’t everything, you can distinguish between people by how much they have. The people don’t have that much because of the lack of money and jobs. Their clothes are homemade in their town and they have very little of their own because their money doesn’t go to material objects but towards bills, food, and their children if they have any.
