Britains monarchy was hard to escape and the british settlers in order to achieve their goals and escape this monarchy and totally vanish from any power and communications with it. Settlers were not yet strong enough to do this ,they had to be much more unified in order to become strong and be able to defeat a very strong if not the strongest nation in the world, England. Settlers had to find a new identity as Americans to become unified and and they did this by the eve of revolution. …show more content…
Settlers started becoming unified and finding their identity when they realized that they were not that different and they could get along well.
In Document H, Hector st. John Crevecoeur says that the American is either a European, or descendant of an European, hence that strange mixture blood which you will find in no other country. He said he could point out a family that has as a grandfather an Englishman, whose wife was Dutch, and sons were married to a French woman . He says that this man is an American who is leaving behind him all his ancient prejudices and manners, and recieves new ones. This clearly shows us that they have acepted them as Americans and they were unifying more and more. People were embracing this idea fast.
In this passage, Hector st. Jhon has a vision towards a promissing future that will eliminate all European prejudices and the sevility of disposition which pverty had taought him. This was the start of something new, America was going to be a nation in which all races were made into one race of men and they will cause great changes in the
world.
In Document A, we can observe a cartoon which has a snake that is cut into seven pieces. The sign says ¨JOIN or DIE¨. This cartoon represents what seven delegates that attended a congress which´s cause was to colonial unity. This sign was so drastic because most settlers believed that if they could not escape the British colony, they would not survive. Out of the thirteen delegates, only seven showed up. This cartoon simbolizes the only hope that the people had to make the thirteen colonies become unified to get their independence. This form of lifestyle was admired by most and this made people´s anger increase towards the British. It is important to say that not all the people agreed to rebel against Britsh rule and they stayed loyal Actions were then taken from both sides resulting in a French and Indian war. Unity then, was achieved.
In Document D, Mather Byles says that they called him a brainless Tory. This was because he thought that the problems with the Amerians will only become worse. Some loyal men to the British rule also did not want to seperate from a stable economy. Mather cannot find a diference between being ruled by one tyrant three thousend miles away, or by three thousend tyrants not a mile away. This was the other face of the people that actually wanted to rebel, but they were less.
In Document B, Edmund Burke states ¨Is there a single trait of resemblence between those few Towns, and a great and growing people spread over a vast quarter of the globe, seperated from us by a might ocean?¨. This man belived that they were all the same, they had the same language, culture, religion, and everything the same excpet the land in which they were living with, but even still, they had no reason on tolerating each other.
¨We saw a set of men…underthe Auspicies of the English Government and protected by it…for a long series of Years ..rising, by easy Gradations, tu such a state of prosperity and happiniess as was almost enviable. But we saw them also run mad with too much happiniess¨. This was written by Peter Oliver in 1781. He represented the point of view of the loyal people to the British Government. He shows us that the difference in opinion of the people of becoming free from the Enlish rule somehow also sepearted them instead of making them more unified. Even though, people Living in North America considered themsleves Americans. Even though they were not completely unified, they were able to find their identity and become strong enough to suceed in the years leading to the American Revollution.
In Document C Richard Henry Lee is writing to Arthur lee and he states ¨N. America is now most firmly united and as firmly revolved to defend thier liberties and infinitum against every power on Earth that may attempt to take them away.¨ This is another point of view which is fighting for freedom of speech and freedom in general that will give all men a better lifestyle. People were tierd and they were searching for something else, a new world with no discrimination and they could achieve this.
In conclusion, we can see that colonists greatly unified the years before the American Revolution, or just when it was approaching. We were able to see that there was also a small percentage of the people that did not want to seperate from this rule, but the desire from the majority to suceede and fight against this rule, dominated.
