“Resting fathers, fly me your strength”. However, strength isn’t all you are going to need when you watch the action packed adventure of Mel Gibson’s creation, Apocalypto starring Rudy Youngblood as the main character, Jaguar Paw. The story follows Jaguar paw, a peaceful hunter from a remote forest tribe, whose life is about to be changed forever. When Jaguar Paws village is raided and he is prepared as a sacrifice that the Mayan gods have demanded, the hunter is forced to maneuver a ghastly new world of fear and brutality. I have seen this movie almost a year ago on TV and I am convinced none could have portrayed it better.

In the book Maniac Magee, Jerry Spinelli develops Grayson to be caring character, especially to Maniac One way that the author developed this trait is by having Grayson say, “Never mind. You still hungry?” The kid flopped back down, “A little.” “Wait here,” said Grayson, and left.” This shows that Grayson is caring because he knew that Maniac must’ve been hungry, so he asked him and left to get a sandwich, which is what a person who cares about someone would do.…

“It is a sin to write this.” begins the story of Anthem. By the end of the story, Equality 7-2521 has a different moral assessment of his actions, but was the eventual assessment of his actions correct? His eventual evaluation being that of seeing this as a breaking of bonds with collectivity, an achievable freedom and disregard of the Council. In all terms, this judgment is correct, indifferent to the few flaws it may have. This can be proven through evidence from the book.…

Throughout history, there has been a trend where populations affected by hardship at home have no choice but to leave in search for a better place. In Their Blood is Strong, an essay about the migrant people in the Great Depression, John Steinbeck describes the struggle of starvation in the plentiful garden of California. In another work by Steinbeck, his novel The Grapes of Wrath, he tells the story of the Joads, a family who must leave their farm in Oklahoma in search of work in California during the Great Depression. The Joads start out optimistic about the life they can have in California, but find a grim situation upon arriving. Similarly, Gregory Nava’s movie El Norte follows two Guatemalan siblings, Rosa and Enrique, who flee their home to go to America, but the life they find in the United States isn’t as easy or…

In the reading “Superman and Me” by Sherman Alexie, the author describes his own experience of how kids and himself were treated by society during his childhood for being part of a different background. In the reading I noticed how the author shows us ways that he has become the person he is by the influence of his family, particularly his dad who sparked his passion toward reading books. In my essay I implemented an additional family factor other than my father and sister; I included my brother. He impacted how I treat people that are constantly looked down by society. In addition, I have grown from my brother’s death and as an effect I have matured as a person and a writer.…

In the poem, “To This Day” By Shane koyczan he shows a bibliography about bullying and how it affects people. And how he got bullied as a kid. People need to understand that what they say doesn't just go one ear out the other. People can be extremely hurtful without knowing it. One thing that kids said from the poem is, “kids used to say she looks like a wrong answer that someone tried to erase but couldn’t quite get the job done”. That is just one of the many things kids said. The quote shows that even if people think i can't get worse that is usually when it does. But the problem is that people dont understand the scar that they leave when they do those…

A long time ago the difference between perception and reality was defined as the act of understanding in contrast to the act of being real. Reality could be tricky; most of us including myself depending on scenarios of our lives tend to give in to ideas which are not applicable to reality as a whole. The best example of this is written in the short story “All Over” by Guy de Maupassant. In which his main character Lormerin is very self conscious and narcissistic also Lise de Vance, a former old love plays a big role in hurting Lormerin ego and opening his eyes by showing him, his real self. Many would say that when reality knocks it could be harsh and confusing. In the next couple of paragraphs I want to show how my understanding of reality can be applied to the short story previously mentioned. Every day life brings so many unexpected moments of which we dream of but never really happen, this is where we draw the line for reality and perception of a perfect to be situation. Reality is in the eyes of the beholder and no one can really change that, all of us are born dreamers. When things get out of hand and reality hits, this is where people suffer. Why do we suffer? We suffer because we give too much or expect too much and not everyone has the same ideals when returning the favor. Also, some events might be trifling to some but extremely important to others.…

The European Renaissance began in 14th-century Italy with Petrarch and Boccaccio. Prior to the Renaissance, Latin and Provencal were the literary language in Italy. It was only in the 13th century that Italian authors began writing in their native language. In the early Italian Renaissance, much of the focus was on translating and studying classics from antiquity, but soon many writers, not content to rest on the laurels of ancient authors, attempted to integrate the methods and styles of ancient Greeks and classical Rome into their own works. The printing of books initiated an increasing number of works to be published in the Italian language in addition to the Latin and Greek texts that constituted the mainstream of the Italian Renaissance. Petrarch , a key figure in the Renaissance literature is best remembered for the Canzoniere, a collection of love sonnets written in vernacular Italian. Petrarch's friend, Giovanni Boccaccio, was a pre-eminent writer whose fiction,The Decameron is regarded as one of the earliest works of prose writing in Italian. Boccaccio was the master of the spoken language and of the swift, vivid, narrative style which is free from the abundance of ornament. He was also a master of the classical models of select vocabulary as seen in his prefaces to the days and the individual stories. These two aspects of The Decameron made it the origin of Italian literary prose for the following centuries. The work also contains ‘canzone’ – examples of some of Boccaccio’s finest lyric poetry. Stylistically, it is the most perfect example of Italian classical prose, and its influence on Renaissance literature throughout Europe was enormous. Boccaccio was a man of the Renaissance in almost every sense. His humanism comprised the attempt to rediscover and reinterpret ancient texts as well as the attempt to raise literature in the modern Italian language to the level of the classical by setting standards for it and then conforming to those…

My favorite part of the movie Apocalypto is when Jaguar Paw stops being afraid and beings to fight back. I believe he realized that the Aztec’s wouldn’t have stopped chasing him, until he was dead. Also he wouldn’t have fulfilled his name jaguars are strong and brave, and they never show any fear, also he wouldn’t have made his father proud of him. So he began to take them out by getting poison from poisons frogs with a stick and shooting it at them. Another thing he did was set a trap made out of sharp wood that stabbed someone. And he also fought back. Another one of my favorite parts is when Jaguar Paw jumps down a water fall. My least favorite part was when the Aztec’s invaded there tribe while they where sleeping and killed people and took others to there tribe. Also when they put the women up for sell and if they didn’t get sold they just let them go without their loved ones. Another one of my least favorite parts of the movie is they just leave the children all alone by there selves. Another of my least favorite part of the movie is when they made human sacrifices in front of thousand of people by cutting there heart out and chopping there head off. Then afterward they would throw the head and body down the stairs. And my last least favorite part of the movie is when they make a game out off killing the rest of the people by having them run while they try to kill them by throwing arrows and rocks at them. At the end of the movie it ends with them running to the beach and discovers people coming on a boat. And then Jaguar Paw make a run for it while the rest of the Aztec’s stand and watch. And Jaguar Paw sneaks off to save his wife and children and never turn…
