Apollo 11 was a turning point not only in American history but also in human history. When Neil Armstrong took that first step on the moon in 1969, almost the whole world was sitting behind an old black-and-white TV watching the first step on the moon. Apollo 11 was a turning point in history for many reasons. First, putting a man on the moon put ideas that were impossible in to possible. Second, the Americans won the space race which made America a world leader in technology and made the citizens proud. Third, it changed not only the Americans perspective on space but the mankind perspective. Apollo 11 had also had political shifts, changes challenges and the American that opposed it.

thought putting a man on the moon was impossible, on July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong said the famous words “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” He made ideas that were meant to be impossible to become impossible. Like taking a man to the moon and bringing them back safely was the biggest impossibility, Armstrong and his crew made this impossibility into a possibility. There were more lunar missions after Apollo 11, there was Apollo 12-17, where Apollo 13 had a accident. We also accomplished brining back soil and rocks from the moon to analyze back home. Humans accomplished putting things in the space like in the summer of 2009 there was new instruments installed on the Hubble the wide field camera was installed which will show us infrared pictures more clear, beautiful pictures. August 30, 2009 the first test flight of a rocket system penetrated through the Earth’s orbit. This rocket will show us if the later Ares projects will work. On October 9, 2009 LCROSS was a robotic spacecraft; the LCROSS mission was to explore the presence of water ice near a lunar polar. Another impossibility that turned into a possibility was in the fall of 2011 when NASA sent the mars rover in to space. Just last year NASA sent a Storm probe in the orbit of the Earth; this will Improve our understanding of how solar storms hit the Earths radiation belts and atmosphere. There will be more possibilities by NASA in the future and there will be more turning points for space and history.
Soviet Union (USSR) started the space race; Americans were determined to win this race. The space race was a mid-to-late 20th century race between the USSR and the United States, the race was for supremacy in space exploration. Between 1957 and 1975, the Cold war rivalry between the 2 nations focused in space exploration. In 1957 the USSR launched the world’s first artificial satellite; this event marked the start of the space race between Soviet Union and the United States. In November 3rd of 1957 the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 2 which carried a dog into orbit. A year later the United States launched their first American satellite to reach orbit. The Explorer 1 carried scientific equipment that led to the discovery of the Van Allen radiation belt. Later on astronaut Alan Shepard became the first American in space on May 5, 1961 The Soviet Union and United States sent spaceships, rockets, spy rockets and all kinds of satellites in space during 1957-1975 just win the space race. This was a big part of Apollo 11 being a turning point because if the space race didn’t happen the Man on the Moon project wouldn’t have been accomplished. Apollo 11 made a Americans very proud because Neil Armstrong wasn’t the only person that landed on the moon but also landed America In lead of technology and it made the people of America really proud.
Before Apollo 11 46% Americans thought it was a waste of money because of all the accidents that happened before Apollo 11, they opposed the idea of getting man. Their perspectives on Apollo 11 were negative, the people of America and the rest of world believed that it was impossible to take a man on the moon because of all the past attempts of taking astronauts to the moon. There were some people that told the government to not to keep doing the missions because it was a money waster where they could use that money for the cold war during the same time as the space race; they also said that it risked astronauts lives and lots of time and materials. JF Kennedy did not quit on NASA because he believed in them and he supported Apollo 11 a lot.
After Apollo 11 the population of America thought it was not worth the $4 billion that was spent on Apollo 11. The reason they thought this was because the only materials we got out of Apollo 11 was the moon rocks, the moon sand, more knowledge about beyond earth, and winning the space race. I believe that it also wasn’t worth the $4 billion just get a three man crew on a spaceship and all the way to the moon.
JF Kennedy was the first president to execute a plan to get a men to the moon safely and get the men back to the Earths land safely. He also beat the Soviet Union to the space race. JFK got a lot criticism because the population of America thought it was not worth spending money, human lives, and time on the Apollo missions. JFK didn’t give up on Apollo he knew that they could do it.
Before Apollo 11 took off into space there were shifts that occurred before and after Apollo 11. Before Apollo 11 there were political shifts like some of governments were rejecting putting astronauts in space, because of all the malfunctions and accidents that happened between Apollo 1-10. Many Americans were also pushing away the Apollo missions because of the tragic things that happened before. After Apollo 11 the government’s favored to have more Apollo missions because of the Apollo 11 being a big success.
Challenges that were faced during Apollo 11 were, before the spaceship was launched and there was a leak of explosive fuel that could’ve kill the crew and destroyed the ship.
The ship itself had many weaknesses; the development had serious accidents and breakdowns. It also went off course and Apollo 11 lost communication with Houston for a long period of time. When the spaceship switched on landing radar, alarms began to go on which meant that computer was being overloaded with data and then Armstrong had to control it by himself.
Apollo 11 made a big lasting impact not in American but Mankind history. The human population still talks about the events that occurred when Neil Armstrong landed on the moon. That day history was made for the whole world to see everyone was there to see 3 astronauts to go into space and step on the moon for the first time in human history.
Apollo 11 still plays a big role in people’s lives. It shows people not to quit on things that are impossible. The whole world was saying that it was impossible to get a man on the moon and Apollo 1-10 proved that getting a man on the moon was possible but president JFK didn’t give up and he became the first president to get a person on the
moon.
The effects of Apollo 11 have changed over the past 40 years. We have put so many things into space we have upgraded so many things like the Hubble we have put up a infrared camera which lets us see more clear beautiful pictures right on planet earth. Just 2 years we sent the mars rover into space. NASA even has a future plans also on their page.
On July 20th, 1969 Apollo 11 was sent in to space to complete one mission and that was to land safely on the moon’s surface. Apollo 11 changed lives and was a turning point not only in American history but also in human history. It also changed people’s perspectives on ideas about of impossibilities into possibilities.
