Respond to the following based on the information in the “Suicide Rates by Age Group” article:
1. What has been the trend in suicide rates over the past few years? Antidepressants.
2. What part of the U.S. has the highest suicide rate? The West side has highest rates.
3. List three risk factors for suicide. Presence of a firearm in the house, substance abuse, and bipolar disorder.
4. Many researchers worry that suicide rates for adolescents and older adults continue to increase. What does the research data show about these age groups? It shows that suicide rates continue to increase among these two groups, there has been less recognition of recent declines in the suicide rates among these two groups, but little investigation of factors that may have contributed to these factors.
5. In the U.S., what demographic has the highest rate of suicide? Older white men.
6. List four possible reasons for the observed decrease in suicide rates. Lower unemployment rates, stock market created wealth & security for many older people who depended on investments during retiring, substance abuse showed a decline, increase in healthy life expectancy.
7. Recent media reports have suggested that medications may provoke suicidal behavior, particularly in adolescents. As a precautionary step, the FDA issued a public health advisory warning doctors to watch patients closely for worsening depression when medication is first prescribed. What does the data show about the effects of medication and suicide? It is possible that suicide risk could increase as a result of medication side effects or as a result of improving depression with continual suicidal symptoms during the first ten to thirty days of treatment.
