Apple's New Organizational Structure Could Help It Move Faster
This cartoon has been floating around the Internet for a few years. It's supposed to be a humorous take on how all the biggest tech companies are organized. It might have to be updated to account for changes at Apple.
When Steve Jobs was in charge, everything flowed through him. Now that he's dead, the company is taking on a more collaborative approach, according to various reports.
The latest, from Adam Satarino at Bloomberg, says Jony Ive is encouraging Apple's software and hardware teams to collaborate, something that never happened under Jobs.
Ive was given control over Apple's software look and feel in November. Previously, he was only in charge of the look of the hardware.
This new collaborative approach is causing Apple to be more deliberate than in the past, says Satarino. This could lead to delays, he says.
Because this is Ive's first crack at Apple's software, it's understandable that there are going to be delays. He's spent six months on a project that normally takes a year.
In the long run it will be interesting to see how this collaborative approach works. As the org chart above

To better understand the iPhone 4’s recent struggles, it is important to pinpoint the theories behind the company’s innovation. Apple recently increased their research and development expenditures and remains confident in their belief that R&D is critical to future advancements and growth. This effort directly relates to the timely development of new and enhanced products that are central to the company’s core business strategy. According to Steve Jobs, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Apple, the company does not perform market research or spend time on focus groups. To make this “collaboration” happen, Jobs relied heavily on the hiring process. He would have candidates meet the top leaders of Apple. This included guys such as Cook, Tevanian, Schiller, Rubinstein, and Ive. After the interview, he would meet with his leaders without the candidate and decide whether the person would fit in at Apple. Jobs goal with all of this was to prevent what he called “the bozo explosion.” Jobs explained that “the bozo explosion” is when a company becomes loaded down with second-rate talent. Jobs’ hiring process took the candidate not only to the area they would be working in, but through other departments and had the candidates talk to them to see how they would fit in.…

So cases are a problem-solving situation. You are given a story, based on a real business situation, and then you are asked questions or posed a problem based on the situation outlined in the case. Some cases are short, and focused on a very specific topic or issue, while others are longer and provide much more information. In both situations the solution that you, and each person in the class presents, is based on your understanding of the problem and how you would solve it.…

Apple's CEO has nonetheles set up a clear level of responsibilities and expectations that doesn't exist at rivals. Unlike RIM's multiple CEOs and other duplicate executives, Apple insists on having a DRI, or Directly Responsible Individual, who employees know is the go-to source for a given product or task. He meets twice with executives every week, on Monday to review key projects and Wednesdays to reach communications and marketing staff. Teams whose projects reach near-final stages are encouraged to take any steps needed to perfect the product, including the iMovie team hiring the London Symphony Orchestra to record iMovie's pre-made soundtracks and on-location video shoots in Hawaii and San Francisco for fake weddings to be used as demo material.…
