Apple's Perspective: An Analysis Of Apple's Advertisement
Apple’s advertisement, Perspective, takes its audience on a journey through a wide, white, industrial space: a seemingly empty art gallery. The setting is framed with large columns, glossy flooring reflecting the grid above, and enormous windows, stretching from floor to ceiling, flooding the vast space with bright sunlight. The camera guides the audience on a tour of optical illusions; each exhibit revealing a hidden message. A new exhibit is around each corner, leading to the next like clues in a scavenger hunt. Phrases such as “Seen things differently”, “Follow a vision”, “A whole new take”, and “Another way; a better way; a bigger way”, are revealed to the audience throughout the ad in a one shot: a single, fluid motion. Schools across the country have seen their fine arts programs sacrificed to district wide budget cuts, limiting students exposure to art programs such as painting, music, theatre, etc. Art encompasses a broader spectrum of our lives. Students involved in programs linked with creativity, such as performing arts and design, are arguably prepped for a rich, meaningful and engaging life, that goes beyond job titles and salary levels. Art provides opportunity for the development of lifelong skills such as analytical thinking, clarity in written and spoken expression, collaboration, and creativity; developing skills that would be valuable in any career. Apple supports this creativity and development, and extending the experience because individual expression is different and leads to new, innovative ideas similar to the foundational concepts that developed Apple’s ideology. Also, art galleries are one such place to build a community- a real, true social network- an art ecosystem. It’s been this way forever. Warm body introductions and interactions are important, but social networks on the internet and social media is another great way to connect. Apple has created an experience that transforms an ordinary object, such as your phone or laptop, into your connection with the rest of your world and your connection with your own different, kind of artistic

Commercials often take their viewers to another world. As a rule, this world must imitate our own for any sense of understanding and purpose. Advertisers take advantage of this aspect of video storytelling to help people connect with their products and view them in ways which are desirable for the company. A myth is created around the product being advertised to position the item favorably in the consumer's mind. Two commercials which display examples of mythologizing products and our society are Slim Jim's, "Camouflage, and GM's, "Elevation."…

The author begins by describing the balance requisite and how an advertisement can rely on how ‘visual weight’ is distributed within its ‘landscape’. In this first section of the article mathematical terms are used to illicit a sense of visual and spatial concepts, for example the ‘fulcrum’ or balancing point. In a secondary section, proportion is emphasized in regards to aesthetic layout in a graphic representation to best describe the size of an element in regards to the rest of the image/picture/advertisement. More specifically, it is demonstrated that non-proportional images use the proportion of a layout to fortify a particular theme or underlying message. In a third section, the movement aspect of graphic layout is explained as a sequence which enables directional flow in order to direct the interpreter into a coherent…

The two articles “You’re soaking in it” by Pozner, and “How Advertising Informs to our Benefit” by Calfee, offer two very different takes on the effects of advertising. Pozner claims that movies and TV shows have become a new medium for companies to present their ads. She goes on saying how these companies exploit their audiences by portraying a fictional society. Although she is very critical, I agree with her, that ads such as Nike sneaker one saying how our product will always be there and at the same time never judge you. I feel this is a very common tactic in the ad business and can sometimes remove consumers from reality. Furthermore she is very critical of relationships…

After reading Stuart Ewen’s book, All Consuming Images: The Politics of Style in Contemporary Culture, I began to realize the importance images have on our day-to-day lives. Ewen does his best to force us into thinking about the power advertisements have on us and he also goes through history explaining the evolution of style throughout culture. What I was able to gather from this book was the chance to see the things that often go unseen. We are bombarded with images that tell us how to live the best life and products that are going to change our lives for the better, but Ewen tells us to step back from all of this and admire these things a little deeper. He breaks away at how these advertisements are created and reasons for why we fall into the trap.…

Advertisers use a variety of techniques in their ads to grab the attention of their readers. These techniques are used to “talk up” their product in an effort to coax the reader into buying it. In some cases, the techniques used can be hard to recognize. Kaenon creates a desire for their sunglasses by using appealing words, crisp and clear images, and subtle hidden messages in its August advertisement in Heavywater magazine.…

Socioeconomic flexibility should not define whether a student has access to explore art. Eliminating art from the majority of public school curricula positions art as a luxury available only to a few. A single curtain divides the artist and the subject, which shows they have no way of seeing each other. A woman talks about her own looks in detail, and the camera zooms in on that particular area to emphasize the beauty of it. Although she may be bashing on that specific spot, the viewer of the ad can see for themselves that her mind is warped in thinking her body is flawed. The camera zooms out, allowing the person watching the ad to see how the experiment is done. After the artist finishes the drawings, the women come back to look at themselves in the two drawings. The camera closes in on their faces as they look between the drawing they described and the one an observer described. Some facial expressions show disbelief, others display utter joy. Many of the women cannot comprehend the substantial contrast between the two drawings. How do they see themselves in such a negative way when others see the brightness in their eyes and joy in their souls? The spatial aspects in the ad contribute a large portion of emphasis on Dove’s purpose in instilling positivity towards one’s own…

Starting off with this reading, I didn't like it. It was just too much negativity against something that we use everyday for the wants and needs of ourselves and others. I do agree however, on the fact that we should buy advertised products rather than those that aren't advertised. I guess you can say its due to the fact that the companies publicly back their products, but I believe if you cannot…
