Day One (April 7, 2014)
TOPICS:
Introduction to Autism
Introduction to ABA
Behaviour and its Kind
Behaviour Repertoire
On the first day of our training, our facilitator described the whole ABA process with a quote from Daniel’s Dictum, which says
“If you think this stuff is easy, you’re doing it wrong.”
After a few introductions and ‘warnings’ as I account to the quote, he defined the word “Autism” as:
Qualitative Impairment in Social Development and Imaginative play;
Impaired Communication Skills and Language Development, and
Display stereotyped Pattern of Behavior.
He also mentioned the three important words – impaired, disability and handicapped. He asked us to differentiate, explain and give example about these words. I volunteered to make an example about these three words that should be present in one person. Example of this is of that a blind person; he is impaired because his eyes are damaged; he is disabled because he cannot see, and handicapped because he cannot perform such activities involving his eyes.
He defined behavior (bx) as anything a person does that can be observed. He also explained what the kinds of Behavior are:
Overt Behavior
Covert Behavior
Reflexive BX,
Innate BX, and
Free Operant Bx (learned behavior)
He mentioned about Behavioral Repertoire which means a part of your behavior such as cooking, dancing, writing a love poem, reading books etc. Lastly, he discussed the characteristic of ABA. He also explained the units of behavior (point, pick, grab, reach, get, hold etc).
