Thank you University Grants Commission, also known as ‘You Get Cash’, for making me nearly mad during the last National ‘Eligibility’ Test and thereby revealing to me in an epiphanic moment about paper. We needs to competent in closer reading and analysis of English, I think. Moreover, questions could also include origin, history, development and growth of English language, the English, anything...I think, now you know where this may end…you name it! To take this point to a higher level, the questions now tend to test your knowledge about allusions, dedications, sources of epigraphs, subtitles, closing paragraphs, opening paragraphs ,award committees, criteria for awards, who publishes what and what not…This seems to end up in an anything goes attitude! Now ,the irony is that when I searched the www.ugcnetonline site, I found that the UGC still maintains a syllabus of study for English NET. Towards the end of the list, I saw this word ‘contemporary’ in it. It took some time for me to realize the ‘danger’ the word carries with it! I would argue that that syllabus is only a generally generalized text. ‘One who generalizes, generally, lies!’ The statement could be extended to say that the reading lists and supplementary reading lists, if there are any, are also wonderful
