Abby uses symbols to attach meaning not only to the protagonist. An example in the first sentence the streets in the first sentence “North Richmond Street” are clear as” being blind” with “imperturbable faces” (Joyce, 326). The use of these means the streets is more that it is lateral or original meaning. Blind in this context represent a dead end that is metaphorically placed. The metaphor enables one to see the streets blindness in a different way. The inhabitants are not able to have a longer view due to an obstacle present at one end of the street thus a narrow world view (Pierce, 111). The real geography of Abby world consists of Christian Brothers School, which is just a few minute from the North Richmond Street. In term of opportunity and availability of wealth, the two were many miles apart. This fact, therefore, stresses the street blindness as a symbol of people’s great ignorance. People who live in the street are depicted to lack light that they can shed on the world. These words illustrate the lives people were
