Select any one of the following to discuss in an essay (identify the chosen topic on your essay, please. Sometimes it’s difficult to figure out.) Take the time to use photos, drawings or diagrams to show examples & illustrate points if at all possible. Comparison 1 Discuss the major differences (and/or similarities) in architecture (with respect to a variety of subjects like materials, technology, purpose, image, culture, etc.) between the 20th century and any one of the other cultures or periods we’ve covered. Choose from among classical Greece, the Early Christian period, Gothic or Renaissance.
Discuss the forces that shaped buildings of the two periods & how each building was/is an expression of its culture (including religion, if your choices involve religious buildings) & time. Select at least one example from each of the two periods with which to illustrate your points, using them as representative of the period. Show images of the buildings so it’s easier to describe issues. Allow your reader to see what you’re talking about.
Comparison 2 Discuss the importance of natural light in both a physical & symbolic sense, … for ancient Egypt, the gothic period in France, & 20th century architecture in general. Use the Temple of Ammon at Karnak, Amiens Cathedral in France, and Notre Dame du Haut, by Le Corbusier in Ronchamp, France, near Switzerland as examples with which to make your points.
Comparison 3 Compare (& contrast) the Villa Savoye, by Le Corbusier, with Fallingwater, by Frank Lloyd Wright, on a point-by-point basis. (Do NOT write first about one building and then about the other. When that’s done, rarely are the points discussed on an apples-to-apples basis. Your thesis & your conclusion will be that one of them is the more successful design, based on your research and objective analysis of each.
(It’s not important which one you conclude is the better. I’s about the process
