Are Romeo And Juliet Really In Love

In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare does not convince the reader that Romeo and Juliet are actually in love. When the two are first together Romeo looks over at her stating that she represents true beauty which he has not seen before. This shows how quickly Romeo is able to move on from Rosaline and generally how desperate he is for a girlfriend. Juliet’s love for Romeo is also likely based out of desperation. After meeting Romeo for the first time in Act one Scene five, she says that her only love sprung from her only hate. This shows how Juliet is blinded by the fact that Romeo says loves her, and believes that he is her only true love, even though she is only about 13 years old. These two things cause the reader to believe that Romeo and Juliet may not necessarily be in the love they believe they are in.
When Romeo goes to the Capulet party in act one scene five to see Juliet for the first time he says “For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night.” This quote from Romeo is likely him exaggerating a lot. Just a short time ago Romeo was crushed because of his breakup with Rosaline. Now, all of the sudden, Romeo says he has seen the most beautiful woman of his entire life. He appears to be completely in love, after just being heartbroken. Rosaline’s break up with Romeo could be the cause of this, as he may want to either make her jealous or he may simply want to cure his heartbreak by falling in love with Juliet.
