Why Smokers should Stop Smoking?
It is a fact that most of the people who smoke are aware that it’s not good for them. Then why they continue smoking? Maybe they do it because they haven’t really become conscious about all the effects that smoking has. There are a lot of reasons they shouldn’t smoke and to talk about all of them will probably take me much more than a college essay length. But I personally think there are three important reasons why smokers should stop smoking.
The first and certainly the most important reason why they should stop smoking is that smoking is bad for their health. Smoking deteriorate their physical condition, it negatively affect their ability to do physical activities which are necessary to maintain a good health. Also, smoking produces lethal diseases like cancer and reduces the length and quality of your life. According to the Center for Disease Prevention and control (CDC) Smoking is estimated to increase the risk for coronary heart disease by 2 to 4 times, for stroke by 2 to 4 times, of men developing lung cancer by 25 times and of women developing lung cancer by 25.7 times. Also according to the CDC Cigarette smoking causes more than 480,000 deaths each year in the United States. This is about one in five deaths. It causes more deaths than Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, firearm-related incidents combined.
Not only is smoking bad for the health, it’s bad for the wallet as well. Smoking raises the price of health insurance and decreases the money in the bank account. According to MSN Money, the average price for a pack of cigarettes nationwide is $5.00 and only getting higher. A pack of cigarettes is already costing $7.50 in Massachusetts and $10.00 in New York. If someone smoked a pack of cigarettes a day, then he would be spending $35.00 per week. This would come out to $1,820 per year and over $54,000 over a 30 year period. That’s assuming that cigarette prices stay stagnant, which we all know won’t happen by a long shot. So why not save all this money for something else?
In addition to the physical and financial health benefits that accompany smoking cessation, new research discovers kicking the habit can improve social life. And, the decision to quit appears to influence an individual’s social network often stimulating many within the group to also stop smoking. That’s maybe because smoking does not only harm the smokers, but also harm all the people around them. So it is seem to be selfish to not at least avoid smoking in front of people who does not smoke. Also, many people don’t like the cigarette’s smell, so they won’t enjoy the company of somebody who smokes.
Those are just some reasons of why smoking is bad, so I hope that reading this those people who smoke will be able to think a little and try to make a smart decision. They should think about how much they love themselves and then decide if they want to continue harming themselves. They should think also about all the people who love them, like their family who doesn’t want to see them suffering or sick.
