The area of New York City’s historic Yorkville neighborhood lies within the now prestigious Upper East Side, extending from East 79th Street to East 96th Street and East End Avenue to Third Avenue (Figure 1.1). Presently bordered by 1st Avenue, East 81st Street, 2nd Avenue, and East 82nd Street, Block 1544 originally lied within the farmlands of Thomas Marston; in 1816, Marston’s heirs and executors conveyed this land to Joshua Jones and the northerly part of this property, present-day East 82nd Street, eventually passed to Isaac Jones, Jr. When Isaac passed away without a will, the land was conveyed to his widow, Mary Jones, and their three children; in 1856, they partitioned the property. On December 3, 1858, Mary de Trobriand, née…
While Opponents argue that if prop 63 is passed it will be a waste of public resources and divert the resources of our law enforcement officers, proposition 63 should be passed because it will ban large capacity magazines and a background check will be required for large ammunition sales. If this Prop is passed it would prevent any more mass shootings from happening. Currently 24 mass shootings have happened in California, because there are no background checks when selling ammunition on the streets or easily on the internet. Since these mass shootings have happened, prop 63 would decrease the amount of mass shootings in California by allowing people who are mentally stable and not criminals to own a gun. Large capacity magazines should…

In 1863, while the American Civil War raged far south of New York City, the metropolis witnessed widespread violence upon its African-American residents. Some poor and working class whites, unable to pay for exemption from the Union army draft resented this inequality and feared the economic competition and potential social changes resulting from the abolition of slavery by the Emancipation Proclamation of 1862. Further, some bitterly resented being drafted to fight for the freedom of slaves, when free blacks in New York, because they were not citizens at the time, were not subject to the draft. The anger toward blacks and the social tensions of the time culminated in the Civil War Draft Riots of 1863, the greatest civil crisis in the history of New York City. The Union League Club of New York was formed 150 years ago to support…
To begin with, it is necessary to define what is a military draft. A military draft is known as a system which individuals who are 18 through 25 years of age are required to join and serve in the Army if they prove to be suitable after an appropriate assessment. Then after proper training, are sent to war or assigned to duties within the Army. Lately, a military draft reinstatement is gaining more attention since the military has a serious problem with recruitment and retaining, however some Americans argue that a military draft directly involves a set of particular disadvantages. Although the military draft no longer exists there are several advantages to mandatory enlistment in the military.…
The subject of drafting men into the army isn’t very complex, it is a mere answer of either you are or you aren’t for drafting. Author, Charles B. Rangel, in his article “Bring Back the Draft,” he shares with us his view point of the draft. From the name of the title you already know that the author is for a draft. His article came from Casebook: The Draft and National Service. I will discuss in my essay Charles B. Rangel’s viewpoints and then cover my own personal view of his article. Rangel is a democrat, whose beliefs are bold and clear for bringing the draft back into the United States of America. I feel that bringing the draft back into the United States is not what the government should do. A draft only enlists the inexperienced civilian who does not know much about war, and this would only increase the death count in warfare combat.…
The constant threat of a military draft has been plaguing in the back of young peoples ' minds since the terrorist attacks of 9-11. Now with the increased tension of North Korea, prolonged war in Iraq, and the all volunteer military struggling to make recruitment numbers, the draft seems almost inevitable. But is that a bad thing? In order to create equality in our military, save tax payers ' money, and end the war in Iraq, I feel that a military draft may be necessary. Many people believe that the draft is a horrible thing, because normally when a person thinks of the draft the refer back to Vietnam. Of course Vietnam was only one instance where the draft was used. In fact the draft was instated as early as the War of 1812, and even used in the civil war. The draft was also successfully used in both World Wars, the Cold War, and The Korean War. Although many problems surfaced during Vietnam, the draft has been refurnished to assure fairness and eliminate loop holes. "If a draft were held today, it would be dramatically different from the one held during the Vietnam War. A series of reforms during the latter part of the Vietnam conflict changed the way the draft operated to make it more fair and equitable. If a draft were held today, there would be fewer reasons to excuse a man from service." David M. Halbfinger New York Times.…
The dreams of DREAMERS have turned into a nightmare. On September 5, president Trump announced an end to DACA. DACA was a program that was passed during the Obama administration. The DACA program allowed individuals, also known as DREAMERS, who entered the United States at a young age, to receive working papers and be allowed to stay in the United States legally. Many DREAMERS feel as if they are now at risk of deportation.…
The 2nd amendment is one of the most debated topics in the United States. It’s a very important topic because it concerns every citizen in the country. Many people feel that the 2nd amendment should be repelled to avoid unfortunate incidents such as a weapon landing on the hands of an irresponsible person simply by not securing the firearm appropriately, an increase of street shootings, and accidental trigger pulls. On the other hand, others believe that the right to bear arms is essential to our country because it protects us from devastating events, some of which include the formation of a tyrannical government, home break-ins, and criminal activity. I believe that we should protect our right to bear arms in order to maintain a safer nation.…
The Taiping rebellion, in Southern China, resulted in an estimated 20,000,000 deaths. So many people died for their cause. I see how important it is for people to stand up for their rights, and die for them to help future generations. Will anyone ever try to take away American freedoms, and cause a rebellions of this size? If it comes to it, I would stand up for the right to bear arms, freedom of music choice, and freedom of speech.…

A new phrase has rapidly become familiar in schooling: "opt-out." Across the nation, hundreds of thousands of students are refusing to take state reading and math tests. The opinion is vary from people to people. Advocates of the opt-out test say that standardized test will result in student’s unbalanced learning and judge teachers unfairly. Opponents of opt-out test say that standardized test will close the achievement gap. In my opinion, the students should refuse to attend the standardized test.…
Immigration has recently been a brewing topic within the media and has caught many people’s attention. This issue has brought multiple political figures and opinions into-the spotlight, each accompanied by a plan and part of a political agenda. Central American immigration into the U.S. still remains unsolved despite the efforts of President Obama who had promised a comprehensive immigration reform. Some believe that America was built upon immigrants, and that smart immigration practices will benefit the economy and nation as a whole. However, others feel that immigrants hurt the nation by limiting the number of jobs available to Americans, and bring crime and public insecurity. Since the Immigration and Reform Act of 1986, both the Democrats…
