The well known eradication of the Dodo Bird added to the power of this cartoon. Its somber look and tone surely predicted the future of ducks if something was not done to protect them. In 1934, President Franklin D. Roosevelt did just that. By signing the Federal Duck Stamp into law, he successfully implemented a means in which to stop the destruction of wetlands that were vital to duck’s survival. This preservation of land, doubled with increased hunter awareness of conservation led to the population rebound that we see today. How does this duck stamp work? Well its very simple, and evidently, extremely effective. Back in 1934, mail was one of the only forms of long distance communication. iphones were not exactly trending back then. With the need for stamps being nationwide, the duck stamp took full advantage of the demand. Purchasing other normal looking stamps did not help any conservation efforts, and were very plain. The new ornate duck stamps were beautiful works of art, and 98 cents of every dollar that went towards purchasing the stamp went directly to wetland conservation. In fact it seems it is almost a symbiotic relationship, where one can really no survive without the other. I am proud to say that I have donated hundreds of dollars every wear towards conservation by purchasing my permits, and I’m truly glad to know that the money is going to the right place, and that the animals are benefiting greatly from it.
