Argumentative Essay: Is Intelligence Inherited?
Is Intelligence Inherited? Some people think intelligence is inherited. There have been a lot of research on intelligence being inherited and not being inherited. It is a controversial issue. It is relevant to this course of study because it focus on the brain of how people think as well as behavior on how people act. Intelligence relates to knowledge and inherit is getting or receiving something from the gene of a parent. It is amazing how some people think or how they were trained to think. Based on the Free Psychological Tests, research shows that “55% of intelligence is determined by genetics and that the way a person is raised by their parent, the culture they were born into, education, and their circle of friends, determine 45% of your intelligence. If you are raised on a poor diet and in an environment that does not really appreciate education, you will become less intelligent than if you are raised on a healthy diet and encouraged to perform well in school.” Other people strongly think that they get their knowledge from their parents. Also some people strongly think that they perform a certain way because of their parents. It is said by some people that if their parents were smart they will be smart or if they lack knowledge that they will lack knowledge. Some people truly think that intelligence comes …show more content…
Researchers have made me become more understandable as to why it can be inherited into one’s life. Some people also contain some of their intelligence from their environment that they are always around and the way they are taught to do certain things. The more people are taught do things, the more their intelligence level increases. If they lack being taught how to do things in the correct way and are being taught to do the things incorrectly their intelligence level will soon

For decades, a lot of emphases have been put on certain aspects of intelligence such as logical reasoning, math skills, spatial skills, understanding analogies, verbal skills, etc. Researchers were puzzled that while IQ could predict to a significant degree of academic performance and to some degree, professional and personal success, there was something missing in the…

Everyone has different theories of what intelligence is. These theories can vary from one culture to another. There has been numerous researches on the effect of culture on human intelligence. These researchers believed that culture plays a sufficient role in learning to understand intelligence. What does culture mean to you? Culture can mean a varied of things, but in this context it is the way of life of a group of people, in which can include food, social interaction (organization) language, education, religion, ways of raising children etc. According to John Ogbu, “Culture consists of four main concepts. These concepts are customary behaviors, code, artifacts and institution. Customary behaviors focus just on the group of people such how…

The psychodynamic approach takes into account both nature and nurture, however the cognitive approach has failed to recognise the influence of nature and nurture. Freud claimed that adult personality is the product of innate drives (nature) and childhood experiences (nurture). These innate drives include the structure of the personality, Id, ego and superego as well as the psychosexual development every child passes through. If a child does not pass through these processes successfully it could lead to abnormalities in behaviour. The cognitive approach has carried out research into intelligence but has not looked at the influence of genes in its research or environmental factors (such as wealth) that could influence intelligence. Therefore this clearly indicates that both approaches are different in terms of nature and nurture. The cognitive approach is useful and has…

The impact of genetics on intelligence tests could be tested between my siblings and I. I have a twin brother who I could compare test scores with. Data shows that monozygotic twins (identical twins) have more similar test scores, while fraternal twins share the same correlation of test scores as other siblings (PSYCH 198). Nature was also impactful in my language development. As stated, I learned language from my parents and the people surrounding me (nurture), but according to Noam Chomsky, I have an “inborn tendency” to acquire language (PSYCH 187). This refers to the language acquisition device, also called the LAD. The LAD sets up the nervous system so that it is ready to learn language. Although the nature aspects are less obvious, they are still present in everyone’s development.…

Intelligence is an intrapersonal phenomenon, that is inside a person and it is generally agreed that the nature of this energy is unknown. Nevertheless, it may be known by its mental products (Groth-Marnet, 1997; Wechsler, 1939). Because there are many different ways to be intelligent there have also been many different definitions proposed (see Neiser, et al., 1996 for summary). A consensus on what constitutes intelligence is generally lacking. Alfred Binet (1908), the author of one of the first modern intelligence tests, defined intelligence as the inclination to take and maintain a specific direction, and capacity to adapt to achieve a goal outcome, and the power of autocriticism (Kaplan, & Saccuzzo, 2005). In contrast, David Wechsler, the developer of the Wechsler scales, defined intelligence as the aggregate capacity to act purposefully, think rationally, and deal effectively with the environment (Wechsler, 1958 as cited in Kaplin, & Saccuzzo). A review by Sternberg, (2005) of intelligence literature over the past century by psychologists and intelligence experts reveals two…

After reading “Hidden Intellectualism” it definitely supported my feelings of what smart can be. I know academics is a part of smartness, but I know that smarts do not come from just books, but also from experience, and being around the block. A person can be extremely smart and have a terrible GPA, just like what Graff was talking about in the article. The person who is struggling does not strive in a school atmosphere and looks towards other things and gets incredibly smart that way. People can be totally oblivious to the outside world and have perfect A+’s, it can work in both ways. (302)…

Even though scientists have proven that genetics can be responsible for all traits, I still believe that some of them are brought out by the way we were brought up. Eric Turkheimer said, “The nature-nurture debate is over… All human behavior traits are heritable.” I believe that they may be traits, but the way we act upon them is in favor of the nurture side of this argument. I believe that I am a very smart individual. I can solve math problems that kids in my grade have never heard of, i.e. derivates, integrals, etc. I also correct my peers’ grammar all the time. I was raised in a home where C’s were failing and B’s were barely acceptable. I feel that if I had been raised in a “C’s are okay” household, I would have a C average. I may be extremely intelligent, but I would become lazy and not try so hard.…

I thought that I had a certain amount of intelligence and I cannot improve it by practice or by anything. How funny is it because currently I am a biological science major at UC Irvine and my grades in the sciences courses are high? All this variation happened when I started going to American high school at the age of 14 years old. My high school teachers influenced me to stay resilient and keep practicing until I get the thing I want despite all the challenges. Thus, I started to modify my mindset from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset. As a high school student, I had desire to absorb and aim to survive through difficulties, learn from criticism, and be inspired by other successful individuals. Referring to Carol Dweck in her book Mindset: The New Psychology Of Success “Picture your brain forming new connections as you meet the challenge and learn. Keep on going.” Carol argues that mind develops and became smarter each time you challenge it. Also people should imagine how minds works overtime and system new networks, minds can be trained. My high school teachers trained me that making mistakes is fine because if you do not make faults in your life you do not attempt hard sufficient. And the significant thing is to pay attention to…

Carol along with Claudia M. Mueller performed a study where they had children take an IQ test; after the test the children were either told they were very smart or that they worked really hard for their score. Additionally, they found that students that were told that they were smart encouraged a “fixed mind-set”. Again, students that were told they were smart wanted easier problems, while the ones that were told they worked really well encouraged them to do much more challenging…

    What Is Intelligence

Isaac Asimov wrote an article titled, “ What is Intelligence, Anyway”. In this article Asimov begins the endless endeavor of defining intelligence. Asimov believes there are two types of intelligence. He begins to explain how some people have the talent of memorization and critical thinking. Others have minds that can imagine something and create or repair it to its magnificent structure. Asimov’s theory is proven to be true, for there are two different sides of the brain. Each side controls two different types of thinking. The first is the right side, which is used for creative thinking. The second is the left this is used for logical thinking. It has been proven that young children harness more power from the creative side. Since schools generally teach towards logical thinking as children grow older more than half of the population use logical thinking. This has a tremendous impact on human intelligence. This shows that people can be equally intelligent but their intelligence can lay in different areas along with the idea that intelligence is something that is not fixed but can be increased. Many would argue that talents and intelligence are not the same thing. However, talent is just a predisposition to be successful in a certain venture. This…
