poverty to be solved in order to deal with issues dealing with education. Social reform focuses on the social issues that come with low income schools. There is a pattern with people in poverty staying in poverty from generation to generation. Social reform entails the idea that it is illogical to expect schools and educators to overcome differences in social class while excluding other institutions and public officials from taking action as well. There is the argument that education reform is a better solution and therefore prioritized over social reform. This approach is believed to show progression more quickly. If one believes that educational reform is the correct approach, then one must answer Rothstein’s problem. A quote from Richard Rothstein says, “it is unreasonable and irresponsible to expect schools and teachers to overcome social class differences while exempting every other institutions and public official from taking action to do so”. To answer this problem, also answers why education reform should be a priority over social reform. Possible solutions to the problem stated from Richard Rothstein would be starting with the quality of teachers.
There is the argument that good quality teachers don’t want to work in low income schools. There’s always going to be teachers who are willing and want to work in low income schools. A solution to this would be the availability of more grants for teachers who want to pursue a career in teaching. Giving grants to future teachers to teach in low income schools would not only help the student with their expenses, but it would also help low income schools. Education reform also focuses on the curriculum. There could be a reform put into place that would require the teachers to teach students of possible opportunities. This would lead to being aware of financial options for college and for different possibilities of life after school. If students in poverty are aware of these opportunities that are available to help them, it will help them succeed and help get them out of poverty. These solutions and outcomes from educational reforms would show results and progression much faster than social
reforms. In conclusion, educational reform would have the greatest impact on educational achievement versus social reform.
