Maya is described as all beings in the universe as part of the infinite splendor like thoughts and dreams. “Maya is the universe that takes on many different forms, including the physical things we see, the events that unfold before our eyes including our very own self-identity.” (Molloy, 2013, pg. 83). Moreover, Maya is the relative time of the past, present, and future and when we look closely, things are not what we first thought they are because we are misled by expectation.

Like the challenges and changes in our lives including our relationships, ideal jobs, careers, life’s experiences, neighborhood, families, and friends. At first, things may appear the same when seen regularly, but they are really illusions. There might be unnoticeable changes, but by revisiting these places, people and things we haven’t seen for a long time or by looking through the childhood photos in the family albums, the changes and aging become very noticeable.
The third mark of existence, “Dukkha” is suffering or sorrow. Buddha concluded without exceptions, that being born brings inescapable dissatisfying experiences. Such as being subjected to pain and suffering from the experiences of the death of loved ones and friends, being diagnosed with an illness, loss of a home by a natural disaster, being fired from a job, etc. Buddha explained everyone responds differently to Dukkha, but learning to be optimistic and acceptance of suffering will bring understanding, and make overcoming dukkha much easier.

Respectively, the doctrine of Maya actually influences my Christian faith as a believer in Jesus Christ. There are similarities, for instance, Jehovah God is an all powerful, omnipotent God, the creator and sustainer of the universe, He is our heavenly Father who faithfully provides for all our needs, the one who directs our paths and holds our destiny in the palm of his hands.
