Argumentative Essay On Medicinal Marijuana
Recent studies on medicinal marijuana show benefits in its use for cancer, seizures and PTSD conflicting reports cause doubt in its benefits. The topic of marijuana as a medical drug as a treatment has sparked much controversy. Generally people tend to be fiercely on one side, for or against medicinal marijuana, while some remain undecided, believing much more research is needed.
Cancer research has shown that marijuana can drastically reduce nausea associated with chemotherapy and may also aid chemotherapy in shrinking cancer cells. According to the website drugabuse.gov, “animal studies have shown that marijuana extracts may help kill certain cancer cells and reduce the size of others. Evidence from one cell culture study suggests that purified extracts from whole-plant marijuana can slow the growth of cancer cells from one of the most serious types of brain tumors” (n.d.).

One study performed in Colorado, found that out of 58 children and adolescents in the study only about one third had some reduction in seizures. Sciencedaily.com reports that 47 percent of the participants had some kind of adverse reactions to the medicinal marijuana, “with increased seizures or new seizures in 21%, somnolence/fatigue in 14%, and rare adverse events of developmental regression in 10% with one patient needing intubation, and one death”(2014).
According to a study of over 47,000 PTSD sufferers over the last 20-years by researchers at the Yale School of Medicine, marijuana would not be a good medical treatment option. Their results show that PTSD sufferers who used marijuana to treat their symptoms, made their PTSD worse.     The use of marijuana can be very beneficial to a wide variety of people with cancer and other chronic diseases. Consumers that would benefit from use of marijuana are chemotherapy patients that have side effects like nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite.
