medical reasons doesn’t constitute as an abortion. However, according to US law:
Abortion is defined as the termination of pregnancy by various methods, including medical surgery, before the fetus is able to sustain independent life. In Roe v. Wade, 410 U. S. 113 (1973), the U. S. Supreme Court determined that the Constitution protects a woman's decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy.
Especially when the reasons are beyond the woman’s control, abortion is morally permissible. Even out of the context of special circumstances, women need to be granted control over their bodies. Unlike the anti-abortion movement, pro-choicers prioritize the woman’s right to choose over the potential life of an embryo or fetus. This suggests anti-abortionists care not about the lives of women, but their role in reproduction. They view them as incubators and deny women their basic rights to their own body. Some women do choose to carry their pregnancies to full term and put their baby up for adoption, but no one should be forced to go through nine grueling months of pregnancy. Unfortunately, conservative governments deny women their basic rights and they are left with no choice but to take matters into their own hands. Without legal access to abortions, women still proceed with self abortions with no medical equipment. Pregnancy termination under medical staff is actually safer than many believe. A woman is 14 times more likely to die in childbirth than as the result of a safe abortion. On the other hand, home abortions are extremely dangerous. Consequently, worldwide, unsafe abortions make up 13% of deaths related with pregnancy. Even with legal access to abortions some women still turn to unsafe abortions in secret because of the stigma associated with it. Until governments and society stops banning women from safe abortions, self-abortions will continue to trouble the world. The anti-abortion movement, no matter their intentions, bases their beliefs on other beliefs and one sided data without looking at the big picture.
One of the most popular arguments against abortion involves quoting religious text from a holy book. This is not solid support because it only proves the termination of their pregnancy is against that specific religion, not that it is morally wrong. In the study of ethics, this reasoning falls under The Divine Command Theory. This school of ethics is disapproved by experts in the field because it fails to acknowledge that other people don’t follow one religion and assumes the word of God cannot be immoral. Despite the movement’s name, the Pro-life organizations ignore the lives of women and their rights. It focuses so heavily on the potential life, the anti-abortion movement violates what it claims to protect, every human’s right to their own
life. The pro-choice organizations fight for a woman’s right to choose what happens to her body. Medical abortions are safe, ethical, and sometimes necessary to escape death. Everyone should have the legal right to choose what happens to their life and body, whether it be the childless life or carry a pregnancy to full term. This country was founded on personal freedom and unalienable rights. Isn’t it time our laws reflect that?
