The Black Death The Black Death was a hopeless disease that broke out in Europe. Nobody was prepared for what was about to come, and the fight for life was crucial while the fight to dodge the scent of the dead bodies on the street was inevitable. Millions of people perished, and ⅓ of Europe’s population had met their demise. (Black Death) It was 1347 and a calamity was brought to the Italians. Not only was disease coming, but surrounding natives were attacking the Italians, whom they believed started the plague, by catapulting the bodies of the dead soldiers struck by the highly contagious plague into the Italian’s fortress in hopes to infect the Italians. Some believed that the earthquake in Europe & Asia prior released poisonous fumes from the earth’s core, while others said it was the devil. Some people also thought that climatic changes had brought warmer and damper weather with strong southerly winds up North. People would try and predict its course by predicting the colors of the sky. There was no regular garbage collection anymore, so the streets were infested with rodents searching through the trash on the streets. Even the mere passing of these rodents could cause a healthy person to get sick overnight. There was no running water, therefore not even the wealthy could wash their clothes. No matter rich or poor, everyone was equally targets for diseases and illnesses that could spread. “It would rush upon it’s victims with the speed of a fire racing through dry or oily substances that happened to be placed within it’s reach” (Boccaccio, 18). When people came to give respects to the pope, they brought the disease with them and 400 people a day were dying in Avignon. The Pope stayed in his private room all by himself, with his remedy of humors and lit fires; the remedy he went by, and survived
