Has everyone forgotten how we got into fighting this war in the first place? We have declared independence from Britain, and ,unfortunately, we are losing! As Thomas Paine clearly states, “What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives everything its value… Britain, with an army to enforce her tyranny, has declared that she has a right (not only to tax) but ‘to bind us in all cases whatsoever,’ and if being bound in that manner, is not slavery, then is there not such a thing as slavery upon earth.”(Paine 153) This reminded me of why I’m here fighting and suffering the terrible conditions in the first place. He’s the one who went out of his way to beg for supplies from the Congress. He’s the one who read to us every night the inspiring words of Thomas Paine from his book of essays, The American Crisis. I don’t want to let such a man down. He has been backing us and supporting us since day one at Valley Forge. I couldn’t just leave him to fight in this way
