The three biblical concepts in Hill that have a direct bearing on ethical decision making and are repeatedly emphasized in the bible are “God is Holy”, “God is Just” and “God loving”. All three are needed for equal measurement and all three contain a vital ethical ingredient “hill compares these to the skeleton, muscles and the skin”. Therefore within every ethical decision that is made requires all characteristics to be taken into account. Holiness, when untethered from justice and love it drifts into hypercritical legalism. If justice loses its anchor in holiness and love it will produce harsh outcomes.…
Another issue with any divine command morality theory is that we have no confirmation that there even is the essential God, a great deal less which God's commands are the commands of that God. There are many distinctive moral frameworks credited to God. This is so even inside of the umbrella of Christian belief in a higher power; more so when we consider different belief…
One of the most apparent logical fallacies in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, is called “No True Scotsman,” or rather, an appeal to purity to emphasize an argument. The play is set in a small town in Massachusetts in the late 1690s. This setting is well known for its overbearing Puritanism and its government that could almost be characterized as a theocracy. As a result of this emphasis on religion, the characters of the play often resort to fallacies that hold religious beliefs at the forefront of the argument. Many of these fallacies accentuate the fact that a true Puritan would or would not do something that a particular character has done, and thus said person is not a true Puritan. For example, when John Proctor is testifying in court, he…
It can be argued, that when referring to the Bible, teachings within it are too rigid for moral decision making. There are many reasons for this, some which are very evident, particularly when looking at certain teachings. On the other hand, some argue that most religious ethics are the right way to approach moral decision making as these contain the teachings and word of God so must be correct.…
Ad hominem: Attacking a person rather than attacking an argument. Kane used Ad hominem when talking about promises that Ghetty made and did not keep. Kane then commented more about things that Ghetty did wrong. After he talked bad about his opponent, he then spoke good about himself.…
Ethics is a branch if philosophy that deal with ideas about what is morally good and bad. Ethics act as tools, giving us guidance when we need to make important decisions in personal and professional situations. There are biblical inferences that can relate to most if not all situations that we come across in our daily lives. God will not put us in any situations that we cannot be triumphant in. If the Bible is an absolute in all of these theories, so is Jesus Christ.…
There are several instances that lead to errors in written, oral, and visual arguments. Either/or thinking is in the believing that there are only two choices, when there may be more. To correct this error you should conscientiously search out all points of view before choosing one. Avoiding the issue may occur by an unintentional misunderstanding or by an unconscious slip to something irrelevant. To correct you should look closely that the issue and ask…
People are extremely motivated by self-interest, even as societies have evolved and grown larger. While the more intertwined societies did lead to a greater need for cooperation in order to live as peacefully as possible, the need to follow the rules of that society can still be ignored when self-interests are present. The need to live by a set of moral rules is well explained by connecting God and morality. As God holds a person accountable, following the moral rules is now is that person’s interest. So even while the person may act according to society, the actions are still explained by the incentives and sanctions placed by God with the promise of Heaven and the threat of Hell, respectively. However, the Divine Command Theory falls short by basing morality solely on God’s commands. Morality then seems subject to God’s whims, which makes morality arbitrary. The opposing view counters strongly with the existence of morals within atheists. For if morals are based only on God’s will, then atheists must be godless brutes lacking any semblance to a moral compass. The morality of atheists is clearly evident, yet the argument failed to establish a reason for morals other acknowledging damage done to the…
Moral questions are questions about right and wrong, or good and bad. For Christians, moral questions are questions having to do with God 's approval or disapproval, and whether something is just or unjust. Ethics describes the rules, principles or values to which a person or a group refers in settling moral questions. Conversations about ethics and morality eventually address the need to make decisions about specific issues or to develop rules or principles to more generally guide decision…
“What is right and wrong?” and “How should I live?” The Word of God is the truth which makes it the right way to live by and the foundation of what is right and wrong (John 17:17) and (John 10:35). God is the foundation of morality.…
Donald Trump is known for the use of fallacies on the internet. For this reason, the first fallacy I looked up was on Donald Trump’s Twitter account. Trump tweeted, “The Democrats had to come up with a story as to why they lost the election, and so badly (306), so they made up a story - RUSSIA. Fake news!” (@realdonaldtrump). It almost seems that Trump is the one spewing fake news, not the democrats. In fact, Trump has made over 100 false claims since he was sworn in, however this is not the point (Dale). William Legate, the founder of Ponder, replied, “The fact that u went from SCREAMING (caps lock) at them yesterday for leaking to denying it today hints that it's all true” (@williamlegate). This is a commonly used fallacy known as false cause,…
Many people deal with different kind of dilemmas that challenge their religious, traditional and cultural values. People might have preference on how to deal with the dilemma and the path to take which they believe to be morally right, but there is no one common right answer for a dilemma. A dilemma is a question with two possible and reasonable answers or explanations, which can be argued from both sides. The Euthyphro Dilemma deals with the question whether or not an action is right because God commands it or, God commands it because it is right. Specifically the dilemma asks, “Is what is morally right right because God approves of it or commands it, or rather does God command it because it is right? (Fisher 359). The issue with this dilemma…
Dr.Wheeler created the Logical Fallacies Handlist and it states that fallacies are statements that might sound reasonable or superficially true but are actually flawed or dishonest. It is important to avoid logical fallacies as they undermine your argument. There are several types of logical fallacies and to keep track of all of them you can separate them into different categories. There are four different main categories that the certain types can go into; they are fallacies of relevance, component fallacies, fallacies of ambiguity, and fallacies of omission. The Logical Fallacies Handlist states fallacies of relevance are all fallacies that appeal to certain evidence or examples that have nothing to do with the specific argument given. The Fallacies of relevance help readers form a conclusion on the topic by distracting from the main point. The types of fallacies that…
There are many informal fallacies that can be discussed but I have chosen to speak of Bifurcation, and the Red Herring Fallacy.…
Ultimately, the final fallacy that will be mentioned is jumping to conclusions. As one might guess this is a very commonly used fallacy and is also pretty self-explanatory. It means, that “the conclusion in question has not been supported by adequate amount of evidence” (38 Joseph). For example if someone goes around…
