Essay On The Euthyphro Dilemma
Many people deal with different kind of dilemmas that challenge their religious, traditional and cultural values. People might have preference on how to deal with the dilemma and the path to take which they believe to be morally right, but there is no one common right answer for a dilemma. A dilemma is a question with two possible and reasonable answers or explanations, which can be argued from both sides. The Euthyphro Dilemma deals with the question whether or not an action is right because God commands it or, God commands it because it is right. Specifically the dilemma asks, “Is what is morally right right because God approves of it or commands it, or rather does God command it because it is right? (Fisher 359). The issue with this dilemma …show more content…
Tough some people might see an issue with this position, Rachels defends his positions with some explanations. One explanation that Rachels give is that, “God commands us to do certain things because they are right.” (Rachels 53). He says that God is wise and he knows what is good and what is not good, therefore, he commands us to do the things that are right and better for us. For example, he states, “ God, who is infinitely wise, recognizes that truthfulness is better than deceitfulness, and so then he commands us to be truthful.” (Rachels 53). As he explains, God knows what is better for us to do and therefore, the things that he knows are better are the things he commands us to do. God does not command us to do what is wrong, he does not command us to do random things, and “his commands are the results of his wisdom.” (Rachels 54). Therefore, God is wise and right and the things he commands are right because he commands them and he will simply not command us to do the wrong thing because his commands are not random, but the result of his

This response to the Euthyphro dilemma seems like an atypical response from Christians on the basis that Christians would reject the first option as they do not believe God’s power is an arbitrary function of morality. And rejects the second option as they believe that God is almighty and omniscient and there is no greater power.…

In the reading Euthyphro, it is an argument between Euthyphro (the priest) and Socrates (who is being indicted by another man). This reading is a dialogue between the two men arguing on the same topic, even though they each gave examples, they still can’t figure out the answer but going “around and around” with the original question. Since Euthyphro and Socrates gave a lot of examples during the argument, I was really confused when reading it. I couldn’t organize my thoughts on the reading. However with the example of Euthyphro persecuting his own father for “murdering” a drunk murder, I start to have an idea of what they are arguing about, in my opinion, it is a question with no right answer for. No matter which answer was given, the result…

In Plato’s Euthyphro, Socrates questions Euthyphro, a religious expert, who he runs into outside of a courthouse in Athens. Socrates was being indicted on the charges of corrupting the youth, and Euthyphro was prosecuting his own father for murder. Socrates was bewildered as to why Euthyphro would indict his own blood of a crime. In an attempt to explain to Socrates why it was the right thing to do, Euthyphro proclaims that he is acting piously by taking his father to court. Euthyphro adds that his relatives are mad at him because “it is impious for a son to prosecute his father for murder. But their ideas of the divine attitude to piety and impiety are wrong” (4e). Because of this, Socrates enquires about what Euthyphro believes piety truly is, to which he provides his four definitions that Socrates ultimately disagrees with.…

In the selection Euthyphro by Plato, Socrates and Euthyphro are having an argument about what the real meaning of being pious and impious is. While standing on the porch of the King Archon, Euthyphro questions Socrates on his reason for being at the court being that he was sure that Socrates wouldn’t be prosecuting anyone and that it was more than likely the other way around. Socrates informs him that a guy by the name of Meletus was charging him with the crime of corrupting the minds of the youth with his poetry and second guessing of the gods. Socrates then questions Euthyphro on him being at the court and Euthyphro informs him that he is there to prosecute his father for the murder of their servant. Socrates, as anyone would be was taken back by the thought of someone prosecuting their father. Euthyphro let him know that he was a firm believer in piety even if that meant prosecuting his own flesh and blood because to the gods relation doesn’t matter when it comes down to right and wrong.…

Socrates encounters Euthyphro outside the court of Athens. Socrates has been called to court on charges of impiety by Meletus Euthyphro has come to prosecute his own father for having unintentionally killed a murderous hired hand. Socrates flatters Euthyphro, suggesting that Euthyphro must be a great expert in religious matters if he is willing to prosecute his own father on so questionable a charge. Euthyphro concurs that he does indeed know all there is to be known about what is holy. Socrates urges Euthyphro to instruct him and to teach him what holiness is, since Euthyphro's teaching might help Socrates in his trial against Meletus.…

As stated in the Divine Command Theory (DCT) of Moral Wrongness, an act is wrong if and only if it violates a command of God. However, there are many oppositions to this theory, the most famous being the Euthyphro problem. The Euthyphro problem is known as a dilemma argument, meaning the structure is set up as follows; either God’s commands are arbitrary or God’s commands are based simply on his knowledge of right and wrong. This dilemma argument is formulated in such a way that if you believe either statement and its following conclusion to be true, the DCT is then inherently false. For example, if the former is true, then God has no moral authority and if the latter is true, morality is independent of God, both cases dispelling the theory.…

One of the most difficult trials I face in my life are ethical and moral dilemmas. An ethical dilemma is more consistent with my everyday life than a moral dilemma. Ethical dilemma is defined as situations in which there is a choice to be made between two options, neither of which resolves the situation in an ethically acceptable fashion. Every day I am faced with decisions of right and wrong most of which are easily and correctly dealt with. Sometimes decisions need to be made that are not easy or clear, however they require thought and often prayer.…

Ethics, considered the study of moral philosophy, is a broad way of defining human duty, right and wrong; essentially, it is more expansive than simply applying a principle. Dilemmas are situations that require a choice between options appearing uniformly favorable, unfavorable or mutually exclusive. Naturally, an ethical dilemma can place a professional counselor in a precarious position, thereby compromising the effectiveness of the therapy, the trust in the client-practitioner relationship, and the counselor's professional standing. Trying to determine the "most" right choice for a particular problem is of the utmost importance. Consider the following hypothetically complex ethical dilemma posed to a licensed professional counselor in the Christian Community.…
