Giving Birth Control to Teenagers
The matter of teenage contraception is a hotly contended matter in contemporary societies the world over. The controversy pits proponents of pragmatism who argue for the addressing of an undeniable reality of teenage sexual activeness and exponents of teenage contraception who hold that the provisions of contraception methods to teenagers will only fuel their risky and premature sexual activity. The object of the paper is to highlight unethicalness of the decision by the government organs to gag the program aimed at the provision of contraception methods for teenager as a feasible method towards the addressing of the predicament of escalating teenage pregnancies.
Graham A (2002) cites that conception rate in girls aged between 13 and 16 is about 1 percent and approximately a half of the pregnancies are terminated. The scholar further presents that in overall 1/3 of all teenage pregnancies are terminated. There is overwhelming evidence from research conducted pointing to the need to administer contraception methods of teenagers. Recent studies have indicted that 18.7 percent teenage woman as well as 27.6 percent of teenage men had sexual intercourse before reaching the …show more content…
age of 16. The foregoing is a pointer to the reality that feasible means towards curbing the prevalence of teenage unwanted pregnancy entail steps to curtail it.
A recent study cited by Falk G (2001) shows that 1 in 5 children aged 13 years indicted that they already taken part in penetrative and oral intercourse.
Reality is that at the stage at which most of teenagers start engaging in sexual activity they are far less likely to use contraception. At this stage it goes with out say that effective means to reduce the prevalence of teenage pregnancy is possible when an open and tolerant as well as pragmatic approach to the reality of teenage sexuality is executed. The approach has proved effective in reducing teenage pregnancy where it has been implemented in tandem with programs of sex education and confidential contraception
advice.
The need to administer means of curbing teenage pregnancy is critical. Teenage pregnancy is a serious social malady. Exponents of the teenage contraception have to consider the effects of child pregnancy on the teenagers themselves. Conceiving children at a young age damages young women’s health as well as well being. The other dynamic which necessitates a decisive implementation of measures to curb teenage pregnancy is the fact that teenage pregnancy severely limits the teenager’s education and career prospects. Research has shown that there is a trend of vicious cycle in the pattern of teenage pregnancy. Children born by teenagers are highly unlikely to get appropriate care and adequate resources in their upbringing which heightens the chances of them becoming teenage parents as well. Teen mother are less likely to finish high school and are more likely to live in poverty than other teens.
