An important contributor to philosophy was Socrates (470 – 399 BC). “The unexamined life is not worth living.” This is a quote from Socrates. He believed that a person must ask questions and seek to understand the concept and ways of life (Doc. 1). He used a form of teaching that used a question and answer formation to force pupils to see things in their own eyes and understand it in their own mind with their own words that make sense to them. This was called the Socratic method, which is still used today. He was accused of corrupting the youth of Athens and a little while after was sentenced to death. During a big part of his life, Socrates examined his own ideas and tried to discover the truth behind many subjects, by reason and logic. His contributions were an extremely important part of the Western Civilization and his legacies were that we should think for ourselves and stand up for what we believe in. Another big contributor to Greek philosophy was Aristotle (384 – 322 BC). Many consider Aristotle to be a scientist rather than a philosopher because of his contributions to physics and biology. Aristotle was also a student of Plato but did not agree with a lot of his ideas. Aristotle…

In 384 B.C., Aristotle was born in the city of Stagira, Greece, and after the passing of his father Nicomachus, whom was king of Macedonia’s personal physician, at a young age, Proxenus of Atarneus became Aristole’s new guardian. Aristotle began school at Plato’s Academy in Athens when he was around 18 years old, and he studied there until he was about 37 years old, which was shortly after the time of Plato’s death. Aristotle’s writings covered an immense amount of subjects including logic, ethics, politics, metaphysics, biology, linguistics, and many more. After his departure from Plato’s Academy, he began tutoring Alexander the Great, and in turn, was announced as the head of the royal academy of Macedon. Soon after, in 335 B.C., Aristotle went back to Athens to form his own school, which was known as the Lyceum, where he spent his next 12 years teaching, researching, and writing. Then in 323 B.C., the anti-Macedonian government charged Aristotle with impiety shortly after the death of his former student Alexander the Great; therefore, Aristotle had to flee to Chalcis in order to avoid prosecution, and that is where he remained until his death in 322 B.C.…

After the death of Plato, Aristotle received an invitation to visit Hermias, the king of Atarneus and Assos in Mysia. During his sojourn with the king, Aristotle married his first wife, Hermias’ niece, and together they had a daughter (“Aristotle”). This time in Aristotle’s life is marked by a notable absence of his written works, implying that he may not have gotten the opportunity to continue his research, or that his works during this time were lost throughout history. His stay in Mysia lasted for a brief three years until, in 343 BCE, he received an invitation from King Phillip of Macedon to tutor the young Alexander the Great (McKeon). For King Phillip, having the greatest Greek philosophers tutor his son was an opportunity to associate both himself and his son with Greek culture.…

Aristotle’s Life Aristotle (384-322 BCE) is one of the most famous philosophers of antiquity, and a founding figure of Western philosophy. A student of Plato and a teacher of Alexander the Great, Aristotle founded the Lyceum, one of the earliest and most influential philosophical schools of the ancient world. By some accounts, he also invented political science as a distinct academic discipline (Strauss, 1978, pg. 21). There is a rich biographical tradition on Aristotle in ancient sources, of which Düring (1957) provides a useful scholarly inventory. One of the most extensive extant ancient accounts is provided by Diogenes Laertius (‘DL’) in the fifth book of his Lives of the Eminent Philosophers, written sometime in the 2nd century AD. In the introduction to his translation of Aristotle’s Politics, Lord (1984) also provides a speculative biography, extrapolated from…
