The Ark of the Covenant was the most sacred and treasured possession of the Israelites. It was built by Moses at Sinai and was a gold covered wooden box, containing the sacred relics of the Exodus and was possibly the portable throne of YHWH, the God of the Israelites.(Hopfe and Woodward 238)
Mystical significance: The Ark was a symbol of the presence and power of the Lord-as it was thought to be the movable throne/seat of YHWH and where He would meet to give commands for the Israelites. Since it constituted the presence of the YHWH, the Ark revealed important ideas and spiritual qualities about God to the believers.
It represented the place for judgement and mercy from God. The ten commandments were placed inside the Ark to serve as a symbolic image of what was to truly be experienced by a true Israelite (spiritually enlightened person)-the commandments should be their lifestyle, the very core of their existence. God’s word should rest within the believer. (Tilghman). They were also a testimony to the covenant relationship between God and Israel; hence giving the Ark another name of “Ark Of The Testimony”, therefore the believers would feel a stronger connection to the Lord through the Ark, where they would seek God’s presence for guidance, repentance, etc. (Rodriguez) …show more content…
It was kept inside Solomon’s temple and the believers worshipped facing it. They did not worship the Ark itself, but seeked God’s presence there so they could worship and praise Him. It played a very important role in the development of Judaism
