AK Steel spent approximately $87 million on environmental capital projects and approximately $1.12 billion to operate and maintain the company’s environmental controls (AKSteel.com, 2015). AK Steel participates in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Climate VISION agreement. This program assists domestic steelmakers in their continued efforts to lead the global steel sector in voluntary emissions reductions (AKSteel.com). Founded in 1857, Bethlehem Steel was America’s second largest steel producer and largest shipbuilder. It was the backbone of the first blasting furnaces, coal, nuclear reactors, warships, cargo vessels and other major infrastructural accomplishments. Bethlehem Steel was headquartered in Pennsylvania dominating the economy and small city of Bethlehem with 7200 people. It had been around for over hundred years but now is a piece of American history disappeared forever declaring bankruptcy in 2001. So what has caused the giant steel producer to become bankrupt that created the first wide flange steel beam in 1907, used to build the Golden Date bridge and 85% of New York’s skyline. In my research I have examined the reasons that took the company from being the top steel producer in early 1900’s to become bankrupt in 2001. Many different theories exist for what caused the demise of Bethlehem Steel.…

The first alleged complaint is from a Georgia-Pacific paper mill in Crossett, Arkansas. The Georgia-Pacific paper mill is located near Coffee Creek in a small Arkansas town. This creek dumps into the larger Ouachita River in Louisiana. Residents of this town have complained about the water and air quality dating back to the 1990's. The paper mill allegedly contaminated Coffee Creek with millions of gallons of paper waste like ammonia, chloride and mercury. These contaminants have left the waters polluted with odor, slime and black pockets of water. The Sappi company supports Living Lands and Waters by providing money and man power to the organizations efforts. Living Lands and Waters searches out prominent waterways in the United States in need of help, cleaning them up while helping the species that depend on the waterways and bring them back to their natural beauty (About Us, n.d.). Through doing this, those that live in the area are made aware of water pollution issues (About Us, n.d.). Sappi gets good publicity from donating to and working with the organization, helping to restore any bad reputation they may have as a water polluter. The American Forest and Paper Association (AF&PA) has also taken steps to show that the paper industry is trying to make the environment better, making up for the damage caused to it by paper production. Better Practices, Better Planet 2020, an initiative put forth by AF&PA to help the environment, has “goals focusing on paper recovery for recycling, energy efficiency, greenhouse gas emissions, sustainable forestry practices, workplace safety, and water use” (AF&PA on the Issues, n.d.). These practices not only reduce waste in the process of making paper itself, but also deal with the byproducts created in this process. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is probably as close as it comes to a criminal institution for…

The climate change mitigation today is a wide field, which it has to be since mostly all of human activity has some kind of impact to the environment. As of today the climate change is a growing subject and has really been taken into attention the last decade (source) as the climate change is becoming more and more noticeable by extreme weather, increasing temperatures, rising seal level and melting glaciers. One topic within climate change mitigation is how the extraction, use and growing scrap levels from different materials is having an impact to the environment. The growing demand of materials such as steel, concrete, aluminum, paper and plastic is forcing the production and extraction of these materials to grow and so does the emissions coming from these industries, together with activities using these materials such as transport. In this paper the role of material efficiency will be assessed by comparing the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from material production…
