Arnold Friend = Devil?
One of the big mysteries In Joyce Carol Oates’s “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?,” Is Arnold Friend the devil or not. Arnold Friend portrays the devil in many ways. In the story, Arnold friend is the devil, he went to Connie’s house and tries to get her to go for a ride with him and his friend Elli Oscar so, he can rape and kill her. Arnold Friend is none other than the devil himself, which shows in his appearance, his speech, his actions and supernatural psychic powers.
Arnold Friend’s appearance is the main reason people think he is the devil. His hair is not natural looking “He placed his sunglasses on top of his head, carefully, as if he were indeed wearing a wig”. His hair is shabby and all over his head like he is wearing a wig to hide his devil horns. Arnold Friend’s eyes are another thing that is devilish. Arnold Friend’s eyes are very weird looking “He took off the sunglasses and she saw how pale the skin around his eyes was, like holes that were not in shadow but instead in light. His eyes were chips of broken glass that catch the light in an amiable way” Arnold Friend’s eyes look very weird as if he was some sort of demonic being.
Arnold Friends other devilish characteristics include his nose and neck. Arnold Friend’s nose does not seem to be natural “The nose long and hawked-like, sniffing as if she were a treat” . Arnold Friend’s nose is not human like which means it must be the nose of the devil himself. Arnold friend’s neck is so different form a human neck “Even his neck looked muscular”. Arnold Friend’s neck seems to be the neck of a muscular animal which is a devilish characteristic which makes Arnold Friend the devil. In conclusion Arnold Fiend represented the devil because he was nothing, but trouble. His first words to Connie were "I’m Gonna get you, baby." That can also represent Connie’s sexual desires because she continued to converse with him and seemed interested for

"The Devil and Tom Walker" is a short story by Washington Irving that many wonder about. It teaches a lesson and has many archetypes in the characters. An older greedy, self/centered guy whose wife is just as evil and sneaky as him. Some ask how could you live with a person like this in your life, some may ask how could you and your wife live with each other? I believe that is a great question and would love to give my analyst on these characters and tell you how they almost sold their soul to the devil or what some may call him “old scratch”.…

In King's "The Man in the Black Suit" and Oates's "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?", fears related to family are exploited by antagonists in young and vulnerable protagonist. "The Man in the Black Suit" presents a young boy, who after the traumatic loss of his brother, has an encounter with the Devil. In this short story, the fear that the antagonist plays upon is the loss of the young boy's mother. Oates's "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been," also plays with the protagonist's family, as the antagonistic launches threats against the young female he hopes to take sexual advantage of. The Devil has been the subject of many stories, always represented as an evil being, a cursed creature that preys on the souls of humans. He is described in many different ways, just like the many forms he takes in many stories. Two famous stories that deal with this fearsome creature are "The Devil and Tom Walker" by Washington Irving, and "The Man in the Black Suit" by Stephen King. Both suggest that the Devil always pursue the human weaknesses, however, Irving implies that the Devil only hunts the corrupted heart; while King signifies the Devil also take interest in innocents.…

The Devil and Tom Walker finds inspiration in myth, legend, and folklore and also values feeling and intuition over reason. To begin with, Kidd the Pirate is an excellent example. “Under one of these gigantic trees, according to old stories, there was a great amount of treasure buried by Kidd the Pirate. This quote explains the legend of Kidd the Pirate. It is an example of American Romanticism because it finds inspiration in myths, legends and folklore. Second, the Devil recovers the treasure after Kidd the Pirate never returns to claim it. “The old stories add, moreover, that the Devil presided at the hiding of the money, and took it under his guardianship…” The quote goes into further detail about the legend of Kidd the Pirate and also the Devil. It finds beauty and truth in exotic locales, the supernatural realm, and the inner world of the imagination. Next, supernatural elements appeal to emotional desires rather than reason. “Tom’s eagerness to the quick and prepared him to agree to anything rather that not gain the promised treasure. It shows that Tom is quick to side with the Devil and is easy to persuade. The quote values feeling and intuition over reason. The way King describes him gives you this image of a creepy looking man, it kind of scares you in a way. King gives the devil black hair which is another color besides red that we associate with hell or evil. The devil is very tall in this description. King uses height to intimidate the reader and make the devil scarier because people are automatically intimidated by tall people. King also uses the word “skull” instead of head in order to give you this visual image of the devil. Skull is a creepier and more detailed word than head is. By using a creepier word it gives the reader a scarier image in their head making the man seem more like a devil rather than a freaky looking human being. King makes the reader feel for the boy and feel his fear of the devil.…

One of the main themes of the Dark Romanticism is nature. Irving describes with detail the nature setting around the characters. In this story Irving says “The swamp was thickly grown with great gloomy pines and hemlocks, some of them ninety feet high, which made it dark at noonday and a retreat for all the owls of the neighborhood”. In this sentence he is describing the setting described as dark, decaying and mystifying. Another theme presented in this story is the presence of the devil. Irving gives the devil human qualities and describes him as a “great black man”, “neither Negro nor Indian”, with a “pair of great red eyes” and with an ax in his shoulder. The devil is said to have various names among the countries and he claims to have witness great battles and conflicts in America. Dark Romantics used images of evil in form of vampires, devils, ghosts and other human-characterized figures. In this case Irving uses the devil as a symbol of evil.…

The first consideration “Arnold Friend as a lover” can be seen through the clear description used by Oates that shows Arnold as a sexual and handsome man, but a ghost of seduction in reality. Oates prints Arnold as the cunning perfect lover. She describes him as relaxed and shone that slippery friendly smile that boys couldn’t put across. Oates portrays an image of a perfect lover, being unobtrusive, friendly, and a sexual man (Oates 486). This image raises a lot of interest in Connie. Connie looked at Arnold with interest, but could only guess about his essence, the image seemed like a bizarre puzzle. She could not make a full image of the man: “all these things did not come together” (Oates 487).…
