Arnold Friend the Devil
Arnold Friend portrays the devil in many ways. In the story, Where are You Going, Where Have You Been by: Joyce Carol Oates Arnold friend is the devil, he went to Connie’s house and tries to get her to go for a ride with him and his friend Elli Oscar so, he can rape and kill her. Arnold Friend is none other than the devil himself, which shows in his appearance, his speech, his actions and supernatural visions, and in clues.
Arnold Friend’s appearance is the main reason people think he is the devil. His hair is not natural looking “He placed his sunglasses on top of his head, carefully, as if he were indeed wearing a wig” (329). His hair is shabby and all over his head like he is wearing a wig to hide his devil horns. Arnold Friend’s eyes are another thing that is devilish. Arnold Friend’s eyes are very weird looking “He took off the sunglasses and she saw how pale the skin around his eyes was, like holes that were not in shadow but instead in light. His eyes were chips of broken glass that catch the light in an amiable way” (328). Arnold Friend’s eyes look very weird as if someone could see many reflections through his eyes like as if he is the devil himself.
Arnolds other devilish characteristics include his nose and neck. Arnold Friend’s nose does not seem to be natural “The nose long and hawked-like, sniffing as if she were a treat” (327). Arnold Friend’s nose is not human like which means it must be the nose of the devil himself. Arnold friend’s neck is so different form a human neck “Even his neck looked muscular” (327). Arnold Friend’s neck seems to be the neck of a muscular animal which is a devilish characteristic which makes Arnold Friend the devil.
Some of Arnold Friend’s other characteristics is the makeup he is wearing and his boots. Arnold Friend’s face is weird looking “She watched this smile come, awkward as if he were smiling from inside a mask” (329). He is

The Devil has been the subject of many stories, always represented as an evil being, a cursed creature that preys on the souls of humans. He is described in many different ways, just like the many forms he takes in many stories. Two famous stories that deal with this fearsome creature are "The Devil and Tom Walker" by Washington Irving, and "The Man in the Black Suit" by Stephen King. Both suggest that the Devil always pursue the human weaknesses, however, Irving implies that the Devil only hunts the corrupted heart; while King signifies the Devil also take interest in innocents.…

The Devil and Tom Walker is a story that has been passed down from generation to generation. This story is about a man by the name of Tom Walker, who believes that wealth and worldly possessions are everything. He is married to a woman that beats him, and she could care less about him or his existence. Tom and his wife are cheap, greedy, manipulative people. They will cheat each other out of anything that will benefit themselves. One day, Tom decides to take a shortcut through the woods to get home. He meets a man that offers him a deal that he simply cannot pass up, but before he decides to take the man upon this deal he takes some time to think it through. When he has finally made up his mind that this is what he wants to do, he takes a trip back to the man and agrees to his offer. The offer requires him to do certain things for this man, but nothing that he is not willing to do. So, as Tom continues life without his wife, he lies to people and cheats them out of their money all because of the deal he made with this mysterious man in the woods. As days pass on, Tom begins to worry about what will happen to him in his after life. With this curiosity, he begins to act as if he is a frequent churchgoer. But, in the end, his effort to “get right” with God does not work, and he is taken captive by the Devil.…

In Irving’s story, he’s a black figure covered in soot dressed like an Indian with bright red eyes and carries and axe. He’s not mean or cruel as would you think. He’s actually very friendly, but manipulative as well. In King’s story the devil is depicted as a tall, skinny, pale man with black hair, red orange-ish eyes and he carries the smell of burnt matches and sulfur. This description though is the complete opposite of Hawthorne’s. In Hawthorne’s story the devil has a great resemblance of Young Goodman Brown. He is pretty much an older version of Young Goodman Brown except he carries a staff that looks like a snake. Despise the devil being seen differently in all of these stories; he was still the same tricky, scheming…

First, I will explain my understanding of what the word "Devil" means. Naturally the word can have many possible meanings and is often used to refer to any number of things. The word itself is etymlogically derived from the Greek "diabolos," which means "One who throws across," describing a person or thing that creates obstruction for someone or something else. When it is spelled with a lowercase "d," it can be used to describe more than one mythological character (e.g., the Egyptian Set, the Persian Ahriman and the Buddhist Mara can all be called "devils"). However, when the word is spelled with a capital "D," then more often than not it is being used to refer specifically to the spiritual entity that Christians have traditionally referred to as Satan, Lucifer, the Prince of Darkness, the God of this World, and the Devil.…
