Arnold feels that he can express his feelings through his drawings. He wants people to acknowledge him for once, instead of putting him down. He doesn’t have many friends, so drawing pictures is a way for him to communicate to the world. Arnold feels alone; he thinks he has no one to turn to. He feels his only escape from that is through his pictures.

Arnold is tired of kids bullying him. He is always targeted by the kids that have more to offer than him. He feels belittled by his peers and has had enough. Arnold wants to fit in for once in his life. He doesn’t want to feel alone anymore.

Being bullied is something Arnold is used to. Even as it gets worse, he tries to shut it out the best he can. No one acknowledges that he has feelings, or that they’re hurting him. Arnold knows that no one should be treated the way he is. He hates being tormented by his peers and just wants it to stop.
“I pretended to be middle class. I pretended I belonged.” (pg. 119)
Arnold thinks the only way to stop the tormenting from the other students is to act just like them. He is afraid that once they find out that he is poor, they won’t want to be friends with him any longer. All he has ever wanted is to belong. He will do anything to be accepted by his new friends. His past experiences remind him of why he can’t just be himself.
