Barton's pictures are so stylised that anyone who sits for a portrait be prepared to be transformed into an iridescent, bug-eyed line drawing embraced by exotic animals, cast adrift on a sea of dots. In other words, don't expect psychological realism. Throughout Barton’s artworks, her ever-present theme is motherhood, which appears in the most surprising incarnations. She treats the business of sex, procreation and nurturing as if it were straight out of a dramatic television show. The everyday occurrences of a woman's life are transmuted into a heroic quest, with mothers and daughters turned into characters from science fiction, like her painting “You are what is most beautiful about me, a self-portrait with Kell and Arella”.…
In fact, her paintings were especially important to Aboriginal people because she encouraged the white, mainstream society to acknowledge their culture and appreciate its uniqueness. She strongly believed that Australia deserved to develop their own style of art and nationality suggesting that her designs could be based on Aboriginal art. Her Aboriginal Glyph, painted in 1953 shows these ideas. Some of her works also featured a number of scenic Australian landscapes, particularly harbour views from her home in Sydney's suburb of…
The criteria for entering is a finished portrait of a significant Australian that has inspired you in the past year. That significant Australian has to have contributed to either science, politics or forms of arts. The artwork must be painted in the past year to be eligible. The competition is had been held annually every year since 1921. This prize is awarded by Trustees of Art Gallery of NSW. This competition is judged by trustees of Art Gallery of NSW. Once the winner is chosen, the painting is opened to the public. This is an excellent way for the artist to get feedback and create better artworks in the future. Del Kathryn’s artworks hold meaning and incorporates many things (the environment, culture e.t.c) into her artworks.…
I will be describing and evaluating the works and artists described above. To begin I will describe each work and its symbolism. I will then summarize the artists and the times of their artworks. Afterwards, I will explain how the works fit into the time period and then compare and contrast all three artworks.…
Her work has a dream-like, fantasy element to it. She incorporates animalistic features in her art. They are always rich in colour and life, with nature and wildlife in general being a key aspect to her work. Her work includes painting, sculpture, drawing and mixed media, which draw on imagery from the human form. My favourite thing about Barton's work is her use of materials. Synthetic polymer paint, gouache, watercolour, pen. She also often incorporates sequins, glitter and beads in her work to give it more life. Her work is very busy and cluttered with imagery. It is rare that her art will contain parts with nothing going on. Infact, it is often so full of colour and scenery that different parts of her work seem to overlap eachother.…
Her work is rich in natural materials, clean lines, crisp simplicity and although she doesn’t have a signature style, she is highly driven by the ‘brief’ to give her clients something unique and that is distinctly their own.…
Many artists enjoy exploring new ideas and concepts and creating them. Most artists think of themselves in one or more of the roles when approaching their art work. First, artists believe they are helping people to see the world in new and innovative ways. Secondly, they believe they are making a visual record of places, people, and events of their time and place (Sayre, 2009). Third, they are making functional objects and buildings more pleasurable and giving them meaning, and finally, artists believe they are giving form to immaterial ideas and things (Sayre, 2009).…
What would you do if you heard a knock on your door at 2:00 am and someone informed you that your husband was dead? This is the scenario that happens to Kathryn Lyons and her husband Jack Lyons, who is a pilot. Kathryn is now trying to juggle raising her fifteen-year-old daughter Mattie with the help of her grandmother, Julia, and trying to avoid all the questions and accusations from the press. She is also discovering things about her husband that she never knew before and wondering why he was keeping these secrets from her all these years. In this journal, I will be questioning, predicting, and connecting.…

I chose to evaluate two works of art from two different time periods, one from the Baroque era and another from the Neoclassical artworks. The first piece of artwork that I chose is the "Resting Girl". This beautiful work of art was created by Francois Boucher in 1715 and is the perfect example of a late Baroque style painting which features the Rococo style. This painting is located in the Wallraf Museum in Cologne, Germany. This painting consists of oil on canvas and was the very example of applying a light romantic touch. Boucher used light and delicate colors with emphasis on the interiors which were elegant and exuded luxury.…

Bennett was born in Monto, Queensland in 1955 of Anglo-Celtic and Aboriginal ancestry (Taylor, 2009). His paintings incorporate narrative through the use of graphic detail. Bennett possesses international critical acclaim achieved through the intricate behaviour in which his work connects with historical and contemporary questions of cultural and personal identity. This engagement comprises of a specific focus on Australia’s colonial past and its postcolonial present (National Gallery of Victoria, n.d.).…
Elizabeth Gaskell’s “Mary Barton” is a novel of social reform that explores injustice, abuse and inequality. The novel is especially concerned with the societal condition of England at the time. In her “Preface” Mrs. Gaskell asserted, “I know nothing of Political Economy, or the theories of the trade. I have tried to write truthfully”. The “truth” of “Mary Barton” is not political or economic but the truth of the human heart. The novel is not about industrial conditions but about people living in those conditions.…
