Arranged Marriage Should Be Banned Speech
Good Morning Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen. As the second speaker from the affirmative team, I will also be arguing about why arranged marriage should be banned. The points I will be discussing today all revolve around the concept of arranged marriage violating human rights. However, allow me to firstly rebut the points stated by the first speaker of the opposing team. The first speaker stated that arranged marriage are more successful, and divorce wise this statement is true. For example the divorce rate of India is 1.1%. However, this statistic shows the percentage of people legally married and divorced, not how many people are happily married and are in a healthy relationship. The statistic doesn’t show the people who are getting abused …show more content…
Therefore, they might find themselves agreeing to a relationship they strongly don’t want to be in. Parent’s opinions should be considered before marrying your lover, however, they do not have the right to guilt trip or threaten you into accepting their marriage arrangements. They may guilt trip you by telling you how selfish you are for refusing to uphold your family’s culture, by saying how you are a disgrace and how you have brought shame upon your family. They may threaten to take away your college fund, or even worse threaten to disown, kill or torture you, if you refuse to accept the marriage they have arranged. This clearly violates multiple rights stated in the UDHR, including the one on article 5 which explains that nobody has the right to hurt anyone in any way, and the right on article 19 which states that everyone is free to say and believe in what they …show more content…
In countries mentioned, after a couple has successfully gotten arranged marriage, the male is automatically the dominant figure and has power over not only the decisions he makes, however also the decisions his whole family makes. Therefore, the bride and the children may be forced into participating in activities they do not want to or practice religions they strongly don’t believe in. This situation also violates two other human rights, including the right on article 16, which states that men and female have the same rights and power once married, and the right on article 18 which states that everyone has the right to believe in what they want to believe and choose a religion based on their preference.

The rights declared by the universal declaration of human rights were created, to ensure that all humans are treated equally throughout the world. Therefore, the fact that arranged marriage violates multiple human rights established clearly explains why arranged married should be banned, since it prevents humans from living a content and enjoyable life. Therefore, ladies and gentlemen, this debate should surely fall in the favour of the affirmative team, since banning arranged marriage would allow us to be one step closer to ensuring that every human is being entitled to their natural

Myers et al., (2005) studied individuals in India living in arranged marriages and found no differences in marital satisfaction in comparison to individuals in non-arranged marriages in the US. This is also supported by Gupta and Singh (1982) who studied 100 degree-educated couples living in India, 50 of who had chosen their partners and 50 of who had their marriages arranged for them. The couples were asked to indicate how much they liked/loved their partners and it was found that love and liking was high in love marriages but decreased whereas love increased in arranged marriages and after 10 years exceeded love marriages. However, this study is difficult to generalise as it studies only a small sample and so cannot be generalised to the wider population. It therefore lacks validity.…

Arranged marriage is somewhat offensive to feminist America. There is a level of freedom attached to choosing who and when to marry. Hollywood portrays arranged marriage as the evil separator of lovers, the extinguisher of freedom, and the ultimate subjugation of women. Vogue has an article titled “The Arranged Marriage That Ended Happily Ever After: How My Parents Fell In Love, 30 Years Later.” The article highlights the good points of the couple’s marriage which was arranged years earlier in India. Yet, these people had a thirty-year marriage without the “passionate feelings to glaze over your partner’s flaws in…marriage” (Jacob). Marriage looks clinical and dry this way. However, this is the outside view of arranged marriage. Cultural customs…

In regards to everyone’s well-being, people should be able to do whatever they choose, as long as it does not bring harm to others. Respecting personal choices of others can be harmless because it cannot exactly harm anyone outside of that relationship. As a social norm, marriage is composed of and supports several aspects of life. It seems Marriage can exist without aspects of sexual relations, friendship and companionship, love, and responsibilities. Marriage is a civil, religious and expressive aspect; it is a symbolic institution. Public debates about same sex marriage develops questions in forms of religion, which finds same sex marriages unacceptable but take this matter internally. How should Red Bull market its brand in the future? I think, although Red Bull has been extremely successful in the past, times have changed and the company and products should change with it, otherwise we probably lose market share to the tremendous increased number of competitors in no time.At the height of early mornings and late nights, Red Bull energy drink became the fuel of choice for people from all walks of life. So how is Red Bull marketing its brand to meet the changing needs and budgets of its customers? How will the privately owned Austrian company expand its product line beyond the silver-bullet beverage that "gives you wings"? My conclusion is that we should focus on direct marketing and use this to bring in a more diverse population of users.…

Arranged marriages are done in around 60% of the world because the system works. In Asia, mainly India and China, arranged marriages are the main form of marriage though this has decreased as science the 18th century. To the parents, choosing their child’s spouse is much more beneficial for the family than the child picking someone that might not be the best fit for the family. Because the parents get to pick, they can chaise someone who is close to the families’ roots, someone who shares the same values of the parents, and someone who will preserve their families culture in future generations. The benefits also work as a union of families, economically and socially as the two families will become more powerful united with each other. The article, Arranged Marriages, by Jefferson M. Marriages are divided into four groups, these are the following groups; "forced arranged marriage", "parents or guardians select the the individuals are consulted", "individuals select and the parents or guardians are consulted", "individuals select and the parents or guardians are neither consulted". There is a controversy started by the human rights movement that it isn't ethical to let your parents choose your partner for life. The Human rights movement actually considers it a violate to womans rights as the man is near always the dominant one in these kind of marriages. The Human rights movement is also trying to prevent arranged marriages as it is a part of one of their campaigns right now. Many people use these arranged marriages only for wealth if the family of one individual is poor and they set up a marriage with a wealthy person, without even thinking about the brides or the grooms feelings toward each other. In conclusion i recommend to always go with the normal marriages of the western world where if you love someone you marry them without anyone else's consent, arranged marriages are just to f'd up and neither partners will be happy in that kind of…
