Art Classroom Observation
Some of the aspects that were touched upon in the Ted talk I can relate to high school. When Ted talked about how schools do not support the arts, I can see where he is coming from. My Studio Art II teacher was telling me and a fellow classmate about how low the enrollment in the art department has been that past couple years. It is not that hard to recognize either because at the school art show the previous year, they could barely fill up the space they had set up in our library. They had to enlist the photography teacher to fill up a whole section of panels that were bare. My senior year though, the school presented a new way for students to take an art class, and it really worked! It was kind of like block scheduling. Usually your junior …show more content…
For starters, we need to make the classes that young students sit in more engaging. Sitting in a seat for over a half hour can cause students to get antsy. If students feel the need to raise their hand, or answer a question in class, it will cause them to be more involved in the material that they are learning about. I also think that when you get a student laughing, it draws their attention more to the material rather than starring at them with a blank face and speaking for the allotted time period. Secondly, we need to boost the curiosity for students in the main classes that they take. If the students become interested in the class and want to learn, then they will retain the material better. Lastly, teachers need to become creative within their classrooms. I know it can be easy to do a project in an English, History, or Science class, but we also have to remember that there is Math too. It may be hard to initially think of a project for Math classes, but it is important that we help students engage with what they are learning in those classes too. Simply projects could help a student remember graphs or even equations they would not have before. If we do these simple things it could prevent students from being left behind, failing class, and even prevent students from dropping

The Greek and Roman Architecture is very much alike, but at the same time they are different in some ways. Wealth and high population densities in the cities had forced the ancient Romans to discover some new architectural solutions of their own. The Roman architecture adopted certain aspects of Greek architecture and created a new type of architectural style.…

The movement to cut art from many schools has been growing in recent years. Education cuts are becoming more prevalent as schools face tough decisions on budgets. Unfortunately, art classes are usually some of the first victims of these cuts. Recent protests in California reflect the growing concern about budget cuts. Schools have already made cuts of $18 billion in California and more cuts totaling $4.1 billion may be necessary (Kirkland 1). California is not the only state facing this situation. Lower tax revenues, increasing prices and the slow economic recovery have created problems across the United States. The event of recent cuts in the art programs is a serious issue, and when I become an art teacher I want to take a stand…

The first art work chosen was a figure by Myron of Athens, Discobolous. The Discobolous, a Discus Thrower, is a Roman marble copy after a bronze original of 450 BCE. A picture of this piece is shown below, figure 1. This piece of art work is simply amazing and exemplifies the Greek sense of harmony and balance (Petronius, 2008). The artist depicted the statutes of that time, a male nude figure, which seems to express freedom of movement and the Greeks idea of beauty. Furthermore, this artwork exemplifies the role of the artist through a representation of human strength and values.…

Most of the time when you walk in a classroom they are this dull boring color and then you look around and see the kids in the classroom and they are either sleeping or dazed out into space. If classrooms themselves were brighter and warm and friendly and teachers didn’t teach the same thing over and over again with one tone of voice and actually tried to make it interesting maybe children wanting to learn more would inspire them to learn more about their own subjects. But, this contradicts the boring argument but kids become bored when they have reached the level of learning with no where else to go. It’s like reaching the top of a cliff with no where else to go, that gets boring after a while but no one tries to educate themselves and learn more they just stay in the same place…

I, myself am interested in the educational system and how it both positively and negatively affects students. I found that Ken and myself shared similar viewpoints, however he went into so much depth that it even further opened my mind. This talk impacted me much more than I thought it would; I realized that I have not really thought about it in as much detail as I anticipated. I have become more aware of not only how much the current educational system will affect the future of my generation but upcoming generations and their future. One thing about Ken’s talk that surprised me was the fact the all around the world, the curriculum is the same; all educational systems prioritize the same subjects - the subjects that allow you to prosper, rather, as opposed to the arts. It led me to thinking about how important it is to change the way the curriculum works before it is too late. My mind started to really ponder on all the times that the sciences were immensely stressed, much more than any art based subject. To actually participate in what I was passionate about, in secondary school I had to join a dance program because there were not many options for dance among the “regular” classes. One hundred years from now the world will be full of a completely different population, who may or may not get the chance to see how creative and intelligent young children truly are. The worst case scenario is that due to this ignorance, children will never be given the opportunity to explore their creative minds due to the current limiting educational system. This information has pushed me in a direction to keep a close eye on my younger cousins, who have just recently begun their educational journey. I will ask them questions about their experiences in school revolving around what they do in school, whether they are ever asked to stop doing something they enjoy,…

The second art piece that I looked at was believed to be created by Qu Ding this hand scroll was created on silk with ink and pale colors during the 11th century of the North Song Dynasty. The hand scroll was created during a period when the images are meant to depict creation. Viewing the picture you connect with the nature as if present in the drawing, experiencing the textures that are created by the strokes and shadows that are created by the ink and pale colors used by the artist on the hand scroll. Possibly belonging to a collection this hand scroll creates balance while symbolizing an escape from life and into the world.…

3.Noise: Classrooms can often become a very noisy environment when children are learning and working in groups or individually. This can be a huge distraction for children and prevent them from producing the best work they can and also slow their work pace resulting in unfinished work. To help combat this it is important to remind the children at regular intervals that they should keep there voices to a whisper and raise their hand rather than shout out. Also having a way to get the whole classes attention when they are being far too noisy for example in my…

Leonardo da Vinci. The Last Supper (after restoration).Leonardo’s “Last Supper” is a priceless piece of art with much hidden meaning and obvious talents bestowed upon a wall. Leonardo was able to use his skills in creating a very detailed and a very naturalistic piece of work that would be remembered for hundreds of years. He was also able to create characters with amazing individuality. Not only was his portrayal of the characters magnificent, but the symbolism he used which emphasized the story being told in the “Last Supper”.…

Socioeconomic flexibility should not define whether a student has access to explore art. Eliminating art from the majority of public school curricula positions art as a luxury available only to a few. I accept the responsibility of imparting my passion for art to students who lack this opportunity because I know how visual communication affirms identity.…

As a teacher, I believe you need to set the tone of the classroom and let them know that you are in control. The medium or atmosphere of the classroom needs to be accepting and eager to learn. All of the classes that I had observed, had great classroom atmospheres. By saying "great classroom atmospheres", I mean that all the students were attentive to the teacher, eager to learn, asking questions and that no one person in the…

Nearly fifty years ago a French born composer by the name of Edgard Varèse was thinking way before his time. Varèse had been fancying of electronic music before it was technologically possible to do so, if he only knew how the youth of today has been swept by electronic dance music. Varèse eloquently stated that, “The computing machine is a marvelous invention and seems almost superhuman. But in reality it is as limited as the mind of the individual who feeds it material” (Stevengrimo.com). It is now the 21st century and the youth have not only fed the electronic dance era but their whole lives have been immersed in technology. From morning till night, a student uses their phones and computers for school, social, work, and informational purposes. As technology becomes a prominent facet in student’s lives, proper implementation by administration is necessary in a fine art’s education. Technology is a useful tool for students and teachers alike and time will only make it more helpful with advancements and improvements. But Varèse’s wise words remind us that using technology in the classroom can be as limited as the mind of the student and teacher who are utilizing it. Having a supportive administration will allow art teachers to teach with technology in an effective way that will benefit them and their students. Both parties will have a positive view on the integration of technology which is not the case in some situations. With a strong support system, this will be the exact burst of energy that the declining fine arts education needs to recapture a new generation’s interest in art.…
