Created in 1990, The Book from the Sky designed by Xu Bing is located at the Blanton Museum. Xu Bing’s main purpose for the creation of the piece was to show his opinion on the concept of freedom of speech in Communist China.
The Book from the Sky is a collection of calligraphies on individual sheets and scrolls that to an illiterate in Chinese calligraphy would believe to be authentic text. However, The Book from the Sky is instead a collection of unreadable characters that still provide meaningful insight into the piece. During the Cultural Revolution, a time period that Xu Bing grew up in, the government prohibited many forms of free expression that led to the suppression of many
