Art of Comparison
Before I begin, I would like to pose a SIMPLE question to all of you..

“What does an apple have in common with an orange?”

Think about it. (Pause)
Can anyone give me an answer??

Yes, they are both fruits. They are both sweet.
Stephen King once said, that Books and Movies are like apples and oranges. They are both fruit, but taste completely different.

You just can't compare apples to oranges, they are both very different.

Don't you hate it when your mother compares your academic results with your other siblings?
Or when the busybody aunty asks you every year, “ My dear, why are you not married yet? You see my daughter.. got married already..went honeymoon in Paris.. now got baby in the oven!! Faster get married la!”

Parents compare us with our siblings.Doctors compare us our heights and weight. And as if there is not enough comparison in the world, Schools compares our result to place us in a particular class.

But normally we are quite silent about this matter probably because we feel dissapointed with the unwelcome comparison. And so we refuse to speak up and defend ourselves, but inside we are silently fuming over the unkind remarks.

There is No Need To Compare

Personally, I believe that there is NO NEED for any comparison because each and every one of us are all UNIQUE in our own ways.

Some people may be gifted at being academically brilliant while others are more gifted by working with their hands and producing great pieces of art!

But unfortunately, many of us do not understand this concept and still compare over the silliest things.

For instance, every Chinese New Year, my aunt would compare me and her daughter, who is the same age as I am.
Every year without fail, she would line me up with her daughter back to back and compare our height!

And she will only be satisfied if her daughter is taller than me.

But the secret is, shhh.. I will hunch my shoulders a little lower just to make myself shorter . I am

Invidious comparison is comparing oneself to others by race, sex, religion, or class. Such comparison could lessen one's self esteem. How can we put a stop to this? The first step is to understand and accept differences. No two people are alike and there will always be someone smarter, stronger, more attractive, thinner, or wealthier. We must acknowledge our strengths and other strengths and stop dwelling on weaknesses. Count what you have and not what you don’t have. Be OK with imperfection and work on goals to improve yourself.…

People see themselves differently from how they see others. They are immersed in their own sensations, emotions, and cognitions at the same time that their experience of others is dominate by what can be observed externally. This basic asymmetry has broad consequences. It leads people to judge themselves and their own behavior differently from how they judge others and the others’ behavior. Often, those differences produce disagreement and conflict. Understanding the psychological basis of those differences may help mitigate some of their negative effects.…

Theodore Roosevelt knew the truth when he said, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” So much pain and suffering comes from comparison. How many of the world’s problems would have resolutions if people no longer compared? Less hatred; anger; unhappiness; insecurity; and frustration would exist. Love would appear more commonly in people’s lives. Comparison truly blinds people to the goodness of…

Following the spread of Enlightenment ideas to the American colonies, aspects of the intellectual movement bled over to influence religious aspects of American society, resulting in what became known as the Great Awakening. This religious movement placed increased focus on the individual and relied heavily on emotional sermons to encourage a deeper connection to Christ. While many saw the Great Awakening as a powerful, religious movement encompassing the ordinary classes of society, there were some discrepancies regarding the way in which it was received in society. According to the writings of Benjamin Franklin, for example, priests and religious institutions initially rejected evangelists such as George Whitefield and their new preaching…

You can compare any two things—an apple and an aardvark, or a slug and a skyscraper. It's easy to compare things like that: a slug is ___ whereas a skyscraper is ___. You could fill in the blanks without even thinking. And that's the problem: you can do it without thinking. That's why so many papers comparing characters are (say it softly) bad and (even worse) boring. The writers don't know their purpose for comparison in general or for comparing those two characters in particular.…

As Leon Festinger stated “People have a natural tendency to evaluate their opinions and abilities (hypothesis 1).” However, not being able to avoid social comparison does not restrain us from carefully analyzing positive versus negative comparisons.…

My life turned around, I thought I was going to suck at diabetes and die or somehow end up without a limb. It then taught me to thrive and bounce back because of the challenges it brought. I know it was appropriate because I stayed calm the whole time just for my mom and I wouldn’t have changed it cause I didn’t care how scared I was, I remained calm for my mom because she thought I was in so much pain. Honestly, now I go throughout my days like a normal kid and now I can manage my disease by myself but it just taught me that anything is possible but I go to learn how to adapt and thrive in new conditions. I believe it connects to the be ready for anything and be ready to adapt and thrive theme because I had no idea what was diabetes but…

This is attained through the feedback of others. Some individuals compare themselves in an effort to create a positive self-image. They engage in a downward comparison with others. They make their failures successes in comparison with others who performed even worse that themselves. Others engage in social comparison for a need of self-improvement. (Taylor, Lobel 1989) In order to advance or achieve success they seek an upward comparison with those individuals who are better than themselves. (Festinger…
